Each day one of the Disney Theme Parks stays open up to three hours after the park closes especially for resort guests. Until now guests had to queue for a special wrist band that verified they could take advantage of these extra hours. Disney is now testing a new system where the guests room key acts as verification instead. Apparently, some people were managing to find ways to cheat the wrist band system.

Opening is an easier one to 'Police' as you need to show your room key to get into the park. The late opening is more difficult as if in the park all you needed to do was show a room key and you were given a wrist band, what was to stop someone passing that room key onto someone else for them to get a wrist band????

I always thought that too, it's pretty easy to just pass your card to someone else and then can get a band too.
I read they were testing the new system this week just gone but that way seems just as easy to cheat to be honest.

It states you need to show your key at each ride, but you can easily get an extra key at reception if you say you've lost your key!
Sometimes they do scan your key when you pick up the band, not sure if that's for show though.
In jan we only had one key as I'd forgotten mine and they didn't even ask for another key I just qued with DH.

in all our years of going during emh never been asked for room key

I wouldn't have thought disney were too bothered about people cheating the system. The more people who remain in the parks the more money will be spent on food and merchandise. EMH is just a gimmick to make onsite guests feel special, but as the park will cost just as much to run then as at all other times it must lose Disney money.

I could never understand the need for the wristbands - such a palaver and for what? I suppose it was slightly easier for the ride attendants than having to check room keys.

I can't remember where I read this news last week, but the article I saw stated that Disney was having trouble getting non-resort guests out of the parks and that was the reason for the policy change. I don't understand how this helps. :confused3

At both P&P parties in Aug 07 - CM's were looking at wrist bands and advising people without bands that the park was now closed and asked them to make their way to the exit.

We have always been asked to show our room key when entering the park on EMH mornings.
