Anyone hear about it. Apparently happening right now. She is pulling into San Juan

Just asked DCLBlog, Scott, on Twitter if he had any more news, if I here back I will post. Really hope it is nothing serious, but that is a pretty big deviation, fingers crossed.

They apparently let one person off, who was taken by ambulance.

We were on Fantasy last week (9/5 western) and had to make an emergency stop off of Great Inagua island on way to Castaway Cay. Dropped a lifeboat to get a passenger off the ship and a medivac plane flew to get them. Most of crew members said it was only 2nd time they've experienced that in their 2 years on board, but twice in a week makes me think it happens more often.

It happens more than they let on, for the privacy of those involved more than PR, but PR is still part of it.
My Dad was on another line, when he noticed them prepping the front of the boat, taking down railings etc. next thing he watches a helicopter approach land for about 4 minutes, then takeoff again. No mention of this was made by any crew.
You also won't hear how much freezer space is taken up by any "GRAVEly ill passengers". Since DCL trends younger on the average age side of statistics, they don't deal with that nearly as much as a Holland America, Princess, or Seabourne does.

With the # of passengers on these ships, I am surprised it does not happen more often.

Good as the medical service on board appears to be, there are lots of things that they simply cannot handle.

And no reason for the cruise Lines to publicize this sort of thing

It happened this summer on our cruise to Alaska. They try not to make a big deal of it and keep things normal for the rest of the passengers. We barely noticed it was going on.

It really doesn't happen very often, I think is just a lot of cruise ships around Florida, the Bahamas and Caribbean.

I believe the lines don't make a big deal of it and the rescues from the water because they don't want possible new cruisers being scared off.

However Disney has pulled off some pretty skilled rescues from the water.

The only drawback to making it as as little noticeable as possible is that people will think accidents almost never happen so medical insurance isn't necessary.

Two books I really enjoyed are
Cruise Ship SOS: The Life-Saving Adventures of a Doctor at Sea
Jun 24, 2010|Kindle eBook
by Ben MacFarlane

and
Holiday SOS
Nov 12, 2009|Kindle eBook
by Ben MacFarlane

My cruising partner is my Mom and at 84 she buys medical and evacuation insurance after reading these books.

This happens way more than you know about. On our last Fantasy cruise, it happened twice. Once was in the middle of the night (didn't hear about it until days later when I was talking to a CM) and we even made an unscheduled stop at Grand Turk on our last sea day to put someone off. In fact, I think this has happened at least once on most of my cruises. We stopped and put someone off at San Salvador (in the Bahamas) on our first cruise and on one cruise we watched a US Coast Guard helicopter evacuated someone from Castaway Cay.

Maybe they were offloading this guy? If what was written was true, federal authorities might have wanted to see his body on U.S. territory.

Whoa.

Speaking about never making the news, except for people who lived in his hometown, would you ever have known a kid was orphaned while on the Fantasy this past June?

Oh that's so so so so sad.

On one of our 4-nighters we were at Skyline and the ship made a funny shuddering feeling well after we'd gotten underway. Later we went to pick up DS, then we wanted to walk around the deck for a bit. Walked outside to see the waves and the night sky etc...and saw...Nassau. We were totally stopped! There had been an emergency and we had gone back to Nassau to get the people/person to medical care.

This was on a the Fantasy a few years ago but we have been onboard several times when there were medical emergencies. These pics were from our porthole. We were watching out of our porthole (Cabin 8006). Also on the EBTA in May someone was airlifted off.
