We will probably book a 13 days from Southampton ending in Ft. Lauderdale a first longer
Dcl cruise

We will not take internet ( well maybe a day or two )
What is the emergency number in case of major emergency that I can give my grown up kids so they can reach us while onboard
Thanks

1-888-322-8732... They will need your name, ship, and stateroom number so share those details with them as well as the phone number

EDIT: I forgot you're in Canada so you need this number 1 732-335-3281

Won't they also need a credit card for payment? Or is the ridiculously high rate just billed to the caller's phone automatically?

Don't know, never had to use it. I just keep it handy to give my kids when we cruise for the sea days, I get cell service whenever we dock.. I've never seen any mention of a CC being needed.

Seems I heard quite a few years ago
that those calles are quite expensive
of course I’ll tell my emergency contacts that they need to use it just For emergency only not any chit chat or how’s your cruise going
but nice to have a peace of mind you can be reach if needed without having to buy internet or phones / cell packages

I know every family is different, but my family is basically of the mind that there's nothing to be done at the point a call about an emergency would be made - and none of us expect others to jump off at the next port and spend major bucks to fly home. So for us, notice will wait until we're off the ship. But we're clearly in the minority on that.

I can't find credit card info, but the calls are limited to 10 minutes and there is a per-minute fee. I want to say it's like $9 or $10 a minute. It's pricey though.

iMessage (Apple) what’s AP (android) typically work well enough to get text messages back and forth for free..

I’d do that first then you could hop on the internet to connect faster and cheaper than a ship to shore number (as they’d call the room you may not be in..)

That's what I tell people, too. If there's nothing I can do about it, I don't want to know until I get back.

Well, it's a 13 night cruise, if someone dies, like your parents, siblings, kids, grand kids, I would like to know. At the beginning of this route, you might have a chance to disembark, fly home, attend the funeral and support the people left behind. Otherwise they are buried, and ceremonies are held before you get home.

If there is a case of bad weather, a flood, a fire and your house is destroyed... yeah, not much you can do about that, and if you would go back you have to go to a hotel anyway. So, less need to go back immediately.

I wasn't saying there was anything wrong with giving the number or wanting to be alerted to emergencies. I was just agreeing with the other poster.

Not necessarily here. Since COVID many families are doing memorial services and such a few weeks after the fact. Many do private family burials or interments at a time not connected with the memorial service. Unless your religion demands instant burial, more and more there is a lag to allow everyone time to get there - even if it's a few weeks later.

Interesting, here (in the Netherlands) it is mandatory by law to be buried/cremated between 36 hours and 6 working days.

Don't think delayed memorial services became a thing here. But then again... we are a small country, it takes 4 hours max to get across the country. What does happen is that with cremation you take a moment with the family to spread the ashes and make that an additional memorial moment. But that could be at any date, we spread my dad's ashes one year after his passing.

Waiting to get back from a 13 night cruise wouldn't be an option here.

We use iPhones and text each other, just like we do at home. Recently, my sister was on one cruise ship and I was another. We did not have internet, but had WiFi connection to use the Disney app. If you don’t need to hear the other’s voice, it is a great way to communicate. While onboard the ship AND in Airplane Mode, it cost me nothing.
