Anyone have a medical emergency while at WDW?

I need to know because there's the possibility that I am pregnant. Won't know until early next week, but we LEAVE next Friday for WDW.

I'm a negative blood type, and while I don't want to believe that something bad would happen in WDW (I have suffered 2 miscarriages and 1 tubal pregnancy), I need to be prepared. I would have 48 hours to get a rhogam shot in the event of... and I'm wondering what my options would be?

My niece was sick and taken by a Disney Van to the local hospital. This was about eight years ago though. The Disney rep. stayed with my sister in law until they were checked in. She was given a number to call and the Disney staff would pick her up and bring her back to the hotel.
If you have any problems while in the park notify the nearest cast member. If your feeling sick they know what to do and how to handle it. I know of two medical emergencies at the parks and both were handled with care and repect. I've heard of one food borne illness at a Disney hotel that was not thrilled with the care they received. That was more that Disney didn't want take blame for some bad food.

With regard to your blood type do you have a medical id? Just make sure your husband is kind of close or you have cell phone at hand.

I don't want to be too detailed with TMI, but if I needed any care, it would really be just to get a the rhogam shot. Like my first miscarriage, it would simply be like having a late cycle. The only difference being that I would need to have the shot within 48 hours.

I've had them administered by doctors/nurses in the doctor's office in the past. I'd like to avoid the ER cost, if there was someplace else, like an onsite clinic, or walk-in clinic near by. We are driving, so we will have our car.

Visiting any doctor is NOT my fav, so I was also hoping to hear positive experiences about any near by facility...

If you want to avoid the hospital never allow the EMTs to put you on their stretcher. The rule is that if you ride on the stretcher you are going to the hospital. I've had 2 occasions to be seen by the EMTs and was notified of their rules. I chose both times to refuse care. There is an urgent care not far from the parks and the hotel staff can point you in the right direction. I've Celebration Hospital and it was over crowded and slow. I waited for over an hour and still wasn't triaged for a food allergic reaction that required me to use my epi pen. The wait was so long we finally left because the threat of reaction was over.

There is a CentraCare Urgent clinic just north of Hotel Plaza Blvd on Apopka-Vineland. We went there once when DH developed a really severe throat infection while on a trip. I don't know if they would carry Rho-Gam, however; you might need to call and ask.

Good luck with the pregnancy. Has your doc suggested trying REALLY large doses of Folic Acid? I had several repeat miscarriages until I tried it, and was able to hold two pregancies once I did. I don't know if the extra Folic Acid really helped, but my doc says it's like chicken soup; it can't really hurt, either.

DH broke his foot while in Epcot last week. The first aid station was very nice. They called an urgent care van to come and pick us up. The van then transported us back to our room. I hope that you don't need it, but it was a wonderful facility if you do.

FYI: You may want to carry a small book or something with you though. The waiting room had no magazines & it can get pretty boring if you are having to wait for too long.

Here is to hoping you wont need the rho-gam. That thing is a "pain in the butt" :lmao: (sorry couldnt help myself.) I am also RH- and need it when I misscarry/ at like 28wks/ after delivery.

Plan A - before you leave, find our which clinics are nearby to see if the area walk-in clinics would be prepared for you should you need the shot...that way if you call and they say they do not routinely keep the medication on-hand, you know that's not an option.

Plan B - if the walk-in clinics will not be able to help, call area OB.GYN's (before you google to find doc's, ask your local, current OB/GYN for a referral - they often know each other from attending conferences and/or going to school together, despite distance and area of practice (s)he might know another doctor in the area to refer you to) and see if any would be able to see you in an emergency situation same day.

Plan C - if neither of the above are options, you might need to do the emergency room route.

Good luck....and I'm sending happy-sticky pregger hopes for you! :thumbsup2

Edited to Add: Just asked DH (an OB/GYN) if there were any other options....he suggested having your doctor write you a script for the RHO-Gam and keep it with you (don't fill the presciption, just keep the paper with you) and if needed, you can fill it at a local CVS, Walgreens, Wal*Mart, or hospital pharmacy and then the walk-in clinic is an option that'll save you time and money since the clinic would likely write you the script, send you out to fill it and have you go back for the shot....if you already have the script, you just go to the clinic and get the shot administered. Also saves time from having to call around before you go!

This is good to know. Likely, I wouldn't need a stretcher...

I will call. That was plan anyway. I was just hoping for info exactly as you provided. A place to call. Folic acid surely couldn't hurt...

Did you go to the same facility already mentioned? That'd be two positives. Very nice to hear.

:lmao: I totally agree! I've had that shot 5X already. Here's hoping for another two someday:thumbsup2 I do thank God it exists now.

Your post was encouraging and helpful. I love the perscription idea.:thumbsup2 Thank you so much for taking the time to respond and talk to your DH. I really appreciate it.:goodvibes

In Epcot when DD was 1, she started to breathe funny so I ran w/ her to the First Aid Center. They called the urgent care van & rushed to the urgent care center (sounds like the same one PP's mentioned). They were wonderful with her...even with the chest x-rays. Turned out she had croup. :scared1: The clinic was not far from the house we had rented & we had a car...otherwise Disney would've picked us up & brought us back to our hotel.

Same trip, my mom had to be taken by ambulance to Celebration ER. We all had some stomach virus (from the plane?) not long after we got there...she had severe dehydration & couldn't stop emitting fluids (to put it nicely). We didn't wait long (maybe cause she was brought in by ambulance) and they were very nice in there too.

Hopefully you won't need any of these services, but Disney knows how to handle them all. :)

Go urgent care if at all possible we had a so-so Celebration ER experiance (dirty amongst other things). I printed out all the peds info i needed before we left the last few trips just in case....
