Emerald Island - How is Trash Handled?

Can someone tell me how trash pickup is handled at Emerald Island for the town homes? In reading on the EI resort site, it looks like you have to take your trash to a dumpster yourself. Can this possibly be right? This does not thrill me. :sad2:

I'm used to Windsor Palms condos or town homes where they have a bench outside your door and it's picked up a couple of times a week at least. I really don't like the idea of having to take trash with me in my vehicle to drive to the dumster on the way to the park, or take the time to walk to the trash to the dumster. While this isn't serious enough to make me cancel my reservation - it's likely to be enough to make me stick with Windsor Palms instead in the future.

Assuming you do have to take your own trash to the dumsters at Emerald Island, does anyone have any handy tips to help with this? We'll be there for over 2 weeks, so we'll definitely be generating trash.

We called the management company and they directed us to a dumpster in the complex. We drove our trash there in the trunk of our rental car with wmpty trash bags under it to shield the carpet.

Yuck. That's what it sounded like to me, but I was hoping for something better. Guess I need to add heavy-duty trash bags to my packing list. And some disinfectant wipes to clean up after handling trash and a dumster on our way to the parks. :crazy2: Thanks for the info!

Are the individual homes handled the same way or do they have trash pick-up? I think this will make me cross Emerald Island town homes off my list for future stays, but I'm wondering about the homes... This seems like a problem to me, and if I were an owner, I'd want something done about it. Maybe it's just me though and this wouldn't bother anyone else. :confused3

I am not sure about the homes in EI, but I know we have a home in Indian Creek, and the trash is picked up at the curb of the house 2 days a week.

That is exactly how the trash is handled for just the town homes. They are working on a better system as we speak. The builder has departed and the HOA has taken over and all contracts and such need to be fine tuned.

The private pool homes are picked up at the curb 2 days a week. I am not privy to an opinion or vote in the town homes because I do not own one but have put the comment on the EI forum. No names just the comment. There are amny owners who are not happy with the situation as it is. Hopefully things change.

We rented a condo in NH and this is how the trash issue was also handled so I do not think it is unusual but not the best way either in my opionion.

Thanks again for the info. Good to hear that it sounds like they're aware that it's not optimal. I'm all for being self-catering, self-cleaning, etc. with renting a town home, but I'd really rather not have to haul trash! And it seems to me that having dumsters around might tarnish the resort image, but maybe Windsor Palms also had dumsters, and I just didn't notice them. The benches for trash outside the door of the condos & town homes at Windsor Palms seemed to work quite well. The lid of the seat raised up and you put your closed plastic trash bags in there. I had no problem with doing that every couple of days.

My neighborhood at home is just being turned over from the builders to the owners, and we're also experiencing some growing pains, so I understand how it can be.

I am still looking forward to my stay at Emerald Island, and at least now I can prepare my DH for trash duty. :thumbsup2

Thank you for being so understanding.

It has been a new experience the take over process.

Our last stay at Emerald Island was in June (we've stayed there three times now) and we were very disappointed in the trash handling situation at the townhomes. The townhome we rented was very close to the pool, which is a great location. The first time we stayed at EI in this villa there was a dumpster right in that section of the complex. I really didn't mind just walking our trash down to the dumpster as it was a short walk. Unfortunately, when we made our return visits, that dumpster had been removed and the only dumpsters available to townhome guests were located near the other set of townhomes which are outside the gated portion of EI. You actually have to load the trash into your car and drive out of the gate and over to the other side of the community. It's very inconvenient to say the least.

As it's been five months since we stayed there, I don't know if the original dumpster has been returned to the townhome area nearest the pool or not.

That does sound extremely inconvenient! We'll be in the smaller area outside the main gate, and it sounds like that's where you had to go to find a dumpster. It sounds like they definitely need to do something about the trash situation for the town homes!

Hi, we are former owners in EI...we had twice a week pick up at the curb...but it is very important that trash is put in the heavy duty trash containers and THE LID is very tightly secured. There are critters both flying and running that can get into any trash container that is not closed and snapped shut. Do not pile the bags above the top of the container without a lid or with the lid just laying on top as it can get ravaged by birds or racoons.

Also, do not put the trash out until the day of pickup...and take it all the way to the curb...

The last thing you want is your garbage stewn all over the street and driveway by a local buzzard...this is not unique to EI but all over Florida...

enjoy....you will love Emerald Island...trash is just one of those things that goes with having fun!!!
