Emerald Club - do you really have to pay $50 to join?

In order to Join the Emerald Club, the website says there is a $50 fee. But Mousesavers and others often note that National tries to collect the fee, but you can often get out of it somehow. Can anyone guide me on how one goes about getting this fee waived?

I followed the link from mousesavers for free sign up from Turner Travel. I did this last year and never had a charge. Good luck

Mousesavers suggests joining through the Turner Travel link. That's what I did and I wasn't charged.
