Embossing help? PIC POST 22

I need to do some embossing with ink for a swap and I'm never done it before. Any tips?
I have black and red ink and red and white embossing powder. I do not however have an embossing tool but I do have a heat gun with multiple settings. It says to hold the design over the heat, so do I heat the under side of the page?

Hi Buffy, first off.. Do you have Craft ink -- not regular stamping ink.. You need the ink that takes longer to dry.
If not, that is the first thing you need to get in order to properly do it.. Regular stamp ink won't work.

Assuming you have the right colored ink --

Step one:
Ink your stamp, and then stamp image onto paper.
Step Two:
Sprinkle embossing powder (clear if you want your ink color to show up) over image stamped and then tap off excess powder.
Step Three:
Hold heat gun over image about 6" off the paper, and move it slowly around.. don't hold it in one place to long or you can burn the paper, or ruin the image..

I am not sure about the gun you have.. I use an emb.gun i got at AC Moore for about 12.00.. not too expensive. You don't want it too hot, but you want it hot enough.. lol.. Again, not sure b/c i don't know the exact gun you have.

Biggest concern you have is if you have the right kind of ink (the black and red).. if it is regular stamp ink - forget it. LOL
Oh--------- and i just read that you have WHITE embossing powder.. Now, if you wanted the red or black ink to show up, you need CLEAR powder, not white.. IF you use white, your ink under won't show up.. your design will only be in white.
Does that make sense??

So the ink I have is Color Box Pigment stamp pads. the embossing powder I have is Ranger, embossing tinsel in Red and Embossing powder in holographic.

Is that the right stuff? And will the holographic show the ink?

What if I want to do 2 colors in the same area? Say I have a circle stamp for the outside and a monogram inside it but I want them 2 different colors, how do I do that?

You have the right ink - pigment ink stays wet longer - that's why you need to use it.

Good to know I'm on the right track! I may experiment tonight but DH is giving me a hard time because I finished my MNSSHP stuff today and he got roped into helping.

What if I want to do 2 colors in the same area? Say I have a circle stamp for the outside and a monogram inside it but I want them 2 different colors, how do I do that?

You are going to be best off to do say the outside first -- emboss that , then go back and do the monogram.. instead of trying to do it together two different colors.

As for the holographic powder, i don't know....... i honestly never saw holographic powder.. sorry!

I did my first embossing this past weekend also. I did the zebra's for my AK swap. I used the versamark ink as it is kinda clear and used the black powder on white paper. Turned out okay. I mean it just looks like shiny zebras. Not sure what I expected.

Hope your experiments go well. I've not seen two colors on one picture before except with a kinda blended together look. Not crisp one color here, one color there.

If you do the outside color first, just put the ink on the outside part of the stamp so the powder only adheres there. Than use a cut out (like a donut shape) to cover the outside circle, restamp so only the inside ink goes on the already embossed paper. Hopefully the next color powder will only stick to the new ink.

I experimented with embossing for my Christmas cards this year and (following advice on here) put them on top of the toaster

Some came out better than others

I don't know if you've tried this yet Buffy, but if not you might want to have a really fine paintbrush handy when you do this. I've never been able to get off all the excess powder (read "stuff not on the image" ) by just tapping. I end up using the paintbrush to remove the stray stuff...otherwise it just looks like "fly dirt" on the paper once it melts. LOL

Also, I always heat from under the paper so I don't blow the powder around.

As for the monogram attempt...a couple things come to mind. I've never been real successful doing that...or at least not really happy with the results.

- I've tried doing a "base" (like your circle) completely before stamping the next image on that. I didn't think the ink/powder stuff too well...the image on top was kind of...thin?

- I've also tried doing the "base" just up through the add-powder-remove-excess stage. I had a brass template for the monogram. I laid that over the powdered base & first used the paintbrush to remove the powder inside the monogram and then added the other color powder. I wouldn't want to do that more than once though! OMG! What a mess!!

I'm going to try to attempt this today. We shall see what happens. Good, bad or ugly, I will post my results.

The toaster huh? I may have to try that. I picture me setting the whole paper on fire with the heat gun! I'm not the most patient person in the world so I would be the one to put the gun right on the paper!

Yeah - keep an eye on it. The paper actually starts to "smoke" just before you can see the scorch marks. LOL I know because sometimes I get too impatient & move the gun closer to the paper. BTDT

Oh - I forgot to mention that sometimes it seems nothing is happening (I did say I was impatient! ) and then suddenly the powder "melts". It's not usually a slow process - the whole thing just suddenly looks sort of wet.

You guys are too great. Before I had a heat gun I used the iron. My DH would always laugh since I was forever burning myself or he'd be hunting in the morning for the iron and it would be at some unknown location. LOL this was before my scrapping space was established so I was a wherever I could grab some room kindof person.

I've never tried two colors but I may have to. I'm just wondering if the hologram powder is clear if you could stamp in the colors you wanted and then put the clear over everything and heat at one time. It may be something to try.

FYI- If you have contact with a SU rep, get the "embossing buddy", it is a little sack filled with a chalk like dust.. that you tap on the paper BEFORE you stamp on it, that prevents the extra powder from sticking where it's not supposed to......... it's WONDERFUL.

Shoot! I knew there was something else I meant to tell you! I came back here 3 times today and each time forgot what I wanted to say.

It was about the static! That's why I have to use a paintbrush. I've read that you can rub a dryer sheet over your paper before you start to reduce the static cling. Unfortunately I can't do that because I'm allergic to the scent they add to them. But static is a very real issue - at least for me - and especially in the winter. Too bad I don't know an SU rep...that embossing buddy might be a solution for me.

How did it go? Did you get a chance to play around with this today?

Oh really! Do I get a PM too?!?!?
The one near just moved out of state so no SU reps around here. I'm not much of a stamper either but there are some really cool stamps out there lately.

I haven't had a chance to do anything yet. For some reason when I started cleaning out the front hall closet something told me to look for our passports and we couldn't find them. So 3 hours and 1 destroyed house later we found them. Now I am off to put the house back together again and make dinner.
