Embarrassing question

I add a fiber product called "benefiber" to mine and DD10 juice, milk, coffee...whatever. It might take a day but it works for us everytime.

It is a powder that can be added to literally ANYTHING (except soda) and leaves no grit, no taste and doesn't alter the beverage you use it in.

I had to be on pain meds a few months back and it did the same to me  but the benefiber worked GREAT. The next morning after starting it (three doses over one day) and all was well, lol.

Hang in there!!

My DD takes a prescription powder,Glycolax, that works the same way. Its very mild and when you start it could take up to 3-4 days to work but it helps her. My BFF who has cancer also takes it on occasion because the chemo/meds tend to keep her system at one extreme or the other. Why not give your doc a call and ask about it? I hope you feel better soon!:flower3:

Yogi brand tea has a Detox tea that does the trick--drink 2 cups a day at first and then 3 if needed. I only need to drink 2 cups a day for 3 days to get things moving again...

My guess is that Glycolax is about the same as MIRALAX. If so, it does not work the same way. MIRALAX is not a 'fiber'.

Same product.. from drugs.com
GlycoLax Powder for Oral Solution
Pronunciation: pol-ee-ETH-il-een GLIE-col
Generic Name: Polyethylene Glycol-3350 Powder for Oral Solution
Brand Name: Examples include GlycoLax and MiraLax

GlycoLax Powder for Oral Solution - used for:
Treating occasional constipation.

GlycoLax Powder for Oral Solution is a laxative. It works by softening the stool and increasing the frequency of bowel movements by retaining water in the stool.

I did some home health nursing. We encouraged lots of fluids & fiber. I'm not sure why some people say apples are constipating. I've never heard that one before. Here's a recipe for you. ;)

Power Pudding

1 cup All-Bran cereal
1 cup applesauce
1 cup prune juice

Mix and keep in refrigerator. Take a spoonfull a day. Follow with a glass of water.

My dd is on miralax...actually the generic glycolax. I was in Wal-mart last week and noticed that they now carry Miralax as an OTC product, it was about $10 for the big container.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions! My mom had some Dulcolax in her house when I went to pick up my kids after work, so I'll be trying that first. So far so good.

Another vote for Miralax. I've been on it for years due to IBS and my five year old takes it now too. It is in fact the same as Glycolax, and I believe Miralax is now sold OTC. It helps by keeping water in your bowels to make things easier to pass. I would talk to your pharmacist though and double check that it has no interactions with your meds

::yes::

If you do prune juice, warm it up first it will actually taste a tiny bit better. :thumbsup2

Lots and lots of fluids and fiber! I do agree you should call the dr if it continues!

Eating Total every day in addition to lots of water seemed to help me out a lot with that problem as well :)

This is what my midwife told me to do when I was having this problem as a resultof the iron in my prenatal vitamins. (She actually said if I eat the Total, I didn't need to take the vitamins at all). It worked like a charm.

They might be but I know for myself a glass of apple juice clears everything up. I actually love apple juice but I can't drink it most of the time because of the issues it seems to cause me. Maybe I am just wierd. ;)

Apples and apple juice have the same effect on me. I will hardly even eat an apple anymore. I have to stick to pears. Binding? Not here.

1. If this is a side affect of medication, then please talk to your doctor. He should know what is normal, and know what to prescribe for this problem

2. I give a HUGE second to the Miralax. (same situation as the poster above - Ds had toddler constipation....) It is not a psyllium or fiber to add bulk and that can cause discomfort, it is not a chemical laxative, it works with your body to provide the necessary liquid so that your system can work naturally like it should.

MIRALAX :thumbsup2

I agree. Your doctor should know of the side effect it's causing.

DS4 is currently on the generic brand to Miralax. He actually asked for it in his juice this morning. The one good thing about it is that it doesn't change the taste of your drink (at least that is what my son told me).

I've actually heard just the opposite. I have been told apples will help get things moving and that banannas are binding. :confused3

I don't think apples are binding and I don't think that's why they are the "A" in the B.R.A.T. diet.

The "A" stands for applesauce and the B.R.A.T diet is given for both vomiting and "the runs." The banana is for binding and potassium, the rice (and rice water) helps aid in stopping diarrhea, applesauce is for the sugars and carbs that have been lost, and dry toast is a bland starch given to settle the stomach (much like saltines).

OP here. Thanks again for all the replies and everyone's concern. This is a dr. who I visit regularly, so at my next visit I plan to let him know about the side effect and see what his opinion is. The medication is a long-term pain reliever, and apparently this is a common side effect so I'm sure my dr. will have some good suggestions - although probably not as good as all the ones I've gotten here! The Miralax sounds like it is probably the best solution, I will have to remember to ask about that one.

I thought of another option. :rotfl2: It's a drink called a Tootsie Roll. Half prune juice, half 7-up, warmed up.

I guess it tastes kind of like a Tootsie Roll, hence the name.

It's really not too horrible. I take it mixed with 1/2 juice and 1/2 water.

OP, I thought of one other thing- acidophilus. My brother swears by it. He used to be a chef and they liked to fool around in the kitchen and make weird stuff. He swears by it for a quick clean and DH has found that it works too. Take a few acidophilus pills and within a few hours you should be cleaning out. I am supposed to tell you that it's a "nice" cleaning out, not a sick to your stomach kind of deal. Hope that helps

Add 1 TBSP honey to a glass of very warm water. This works for my family. Some of the OTC remedies give me headaches and then the "trots".

I never heard of that before. Thanks for the info. Looks like I learned something new.
