well, not for me, but my 6yo niece

She still has occasional bedwetting issues.....as such she's a bit afraid to stay overnight away from home.

How well do Disney hotels deal with this?

I would not fret over this...are you kidding? Do you know how many millions of kids go to Disney?LOL. I would discretely (so as not to embarass your niece) tell the front desk at check-in, they will notify housekeeping. Housekeeping will probably place a plastic covering over the matress and no problem. If an "accident" occurs, simply remove the sheets so housekeeping knows. Once you know who your housekeeper is, I would pull them aside and thank them for any "extra effort" they may make. Don't forget to tip generously. Relax....during one trip,my daughter at age 5, vomited all over the room!!! Our housekeeper was very understanding and was compensated for this "extra" duty. This is one of the reasons why it is essential to be nice to your housekeeping staff. Explain to your niece that things like this happen...even Mickey Mouse wets the bed occassionally....shoot, I almost wet my pants on the TOT!!!!

How many people will be in the room? Would she consider wearing Pull-Ups at night? I know of a lot of children around her age who wear them when away from home, simply because a bladder that young can't always be trusted in that situation.

They have larger size "pull-up" type protective pants - I think they are sold on the diaper aisle (meaning - don't bring her with you when you buy them!) and they are called Good Nites - they are marketed for older kids (ads target the fear of sleeping away from home, etc) - I think they go up to 80 lbs.

Go to www.goodnites.com - they even have a coupon along with lots of info about that!

As for how the staff handles it - my daughter (just turned 6) and I just went on a Disney Cruise and although she has never had a problem with bedwetting (heck - she doesn't even head for the bathroom first thing in the a.m.!) - she did wet the bed one night there - She had been drinking soda earlier, and then fell asleep watching tv before I got her to go to the bathroom (one of the last things we do before we read bedtime stories) - We realized it the next morning - I think I left an apologetic note for the room steward and then ran into him in the hallway and told him we had an accident - when I saw him later - he said that he had taken care of it (meaning changed the sheets) - and was very nice about it. I'm sure that with the sheer volume of children visiting Disney - your niece won't be the first, won't be the last - and will probably be one of several that night who had an accident -

Even so, the Good Nites are a great idea - there is nothing worse than waking up with wet clothes, wet sheets and the horrible feeling of embarrassment - I know - I had that problem when I was younger....

Hope that helps!

My son had to wear pull-ups until he was 6. He was never embarrassed around us. He is a very heavy sleeper, once he is out, he is gone so that was the problem.

I would not worry.

I also would suggest notifying housekeeping for a plastic cover or you could even bring your own.

There are also many different waterproof pads at baby stores that are usually rectangle or square in shape and can be lap size to bigger than crib size. They feel kind of fuzzy like a blanket but are waterproof.

I also would tip the housekeeper.

Relax and have fun. I'm sure hundreds of families deal with this same issue all the time at Disney. I think Disney appreciates people taking the extra effort so the mattresses stay in good shape.

What I always did was carry one or two of those platic crib liners, they are flat & covered with a soft felt-like material and the child will not even know when you put it under his/her sheet. Buy them at Toys R'Us baby department or similar place. With an older child put it with the wider part across the bed (rather than lengthwise) for better coverage. This protects the mattress and makes the clean up VERY easy. We all know it is better to avoid getting the mattress wet, not to mention easier to clean up and drier for the child too. You could ask the maid to provide an extra set of sheets so you can do a fast cleanup at night. I highly recommend this over letting it happen on the mattress.

housekeeping has waterproof bedpads available. They will even provide an extra one and a set of extra sheets so that you can change the bed in the middle of the night if you need to.

We use one of those waterproof pads and we use Goodnights that polkadotladybug mentioned for our youngest DD. Because of her disability, it's hard to get her up once she's in bed and she is not always able to have good control because of her muscle tone. She's aher thin and weighs 81 pounds, but the size medium (45 to 65 pounds) fits her fine.

Disney has "millions" of visitors at their resorts. I am positive your niece's situation is not unique. DON'T WORRY. Have your niece do whatever she does at home. Your all on vacation & shouldn't be worrying about anything, especially that.

DS8 still has an occassional problem of wetting the bed. Whenever we are away from home we bring him a pull-up, or whatever they are called for older kids. We don't make a big deal out of it.

Three out of my five kids wet the bed for a long time. My youngest daughter wet the bed, off and on, until she was about 13 years old. Needless to stay, this made any sleepovers out of the question for her. When she was 10, she started AAU basketball. There were tournaments where she had to sleep over. Our pediatrician prescribed DDAVP, which is a nasal spray. It contains an "anti-diuretic" hormone. All this did was stop the bedwetting. She only used it when she had to sleep over some place. It did not "interfere" with her hormones or have any effect on her body except to control the bedwetting. It was a life saver for her. this is something you might want to check out with your pediatrician. My daughter stopped her bedwetting awhile ago. She is now 18. But the DDAVP really helped her.

I use the CVS brand of Goodnites for my son (4), and they are comparable to the namebrand. They are 8.99 here in NY for a pack of I believe 17 or 18, which is a couple bucks cheaper than the namebrand. HTH :)

"Accidents" can happen to adults too. I have this very "heavy" friend that visits me EVERY month and I just know that friend will visit me in Disney!!!

Huggies also sells pull-ups for older kids. They come in 4T-5T and fit a 5 year old no problem. They also have Minnie Mouse on them for girls!

My friends daughter still has accidents at night and is school-aged. She first avoided sleep-overs but now wears a pull-up (I guess the kids aren't aware she has them on) and then goes to the bathroom in the morning with her bag and puts the used pull-up in a plastic bag her mom sent with her. She said it's working great and her daughter is not embarrassed.

The Good-nights are for older kids and are solid white. My DS wore them to camp and said nobody paid any attention to him one way or the other. If she's prone to bedwetting, I'd have her wear the pull-ups. My kids are so tired by the end of the day, they sleep even more deeply than normal. And normal when they were younger meant sleeping deeply enough not to feel "the urge."

BarbaraMB, thanks for making me laugh!

Yup, I just got 20 of the 3 pack ($1.99 each) size 4T-5T size ones for my son for free!! Well..I used the $2.50 off any size Pull-Ups coupon at Wal-Greens for them so I actually made some money on them. (hopefully we won't need to use that many before he gets fully potty trained)
