I was wondering what you tell your children when they see Elf on the Shelf in the stores. I was in the store with my niece and nephew and I caught the Elf display out of the corner of my eye. I quickly went the other way. I didn't want to have them ask me about it, and I wasn't sure if they had ever asked my sister or my brother-in-law about it. So what do you tell your children when they see these elves being sold in stores?

In the movie it has one of the elves being sent to a store. You could say it's like in the movie. You could say those elves are there to watch the kids in the stores to report back to santa?

I haven't seen the movie, but I always steer my daughter away from those displays before she notices.

We just had this conversation today. I just told mine that ours was an "authentic Santa approved" elf and the ones on the shelf are fakes. ;0)

I've seen them many times lately advertised in circulars, too. We started the elf way back, when my kids were little, and it wasn't very popular (had to buy it online, and no one we knew did it). I think all but really young kids know it's fake.

Funny story: My boys are not believers. Never bought the Easter Bunny or Tooth Fairy and Santa was gone by kindergarten. Well we thought it would still be fun to do the Elf. DS was 5 and we had no expectations he would really believe. "Buddy" arrived and was sitting on the tip top of my cabinets when we got home. Well, DS21 must have not gotten him up there very well because just as DS spotted him he fell down. Well of course it did look like he jumped!!! DS believed! Now if he ask, we will tell the truth just because that is how we roll, but he never did last year. I doubt he will believe this year but we will see.

On the website it says that those in stores are Santa approved elf adoption centers. I can't remember if it's in the book that the elf comes with, I'll have to find it and look. My kids love "Jack".
