What does your Elf look like? Is it poseable? Also how did you introduce him/her to the family? I guess a letter written from Santa but what did it say? TIA

We bought the one that comes in the box and the book, that explains who he is, what he does and the powers he possesses. It has worked like a charm. This year, I found a small version that is the size of a small Christmas ornament and comes in a velvet bag that I plan on using when we travel (Trying to hide "Marvin" in the suitcase last year without them noticing him tucked in there was crazy!!) I plan on having Marvin leave a note for them the night we leave for WDW on the 6th telling the boys that Santa is giving him extra magical powers to shrink down to be small so that he can come to Disney World with them this year and not have to pay for a seat on the plane.

Ours came from the Hobby Lobby. He is about 12 inches tall and is cloth bodied. He is very friendly looking. I had a hard time finding what I wanted.

Thank you so much! DD(5) suddenly thinks an elf on the shelf needs to come visit this year (in the past they had one at preschool and she said she hoped one didn't come to her house, so we haven't done it). Thanks to your post, I stopped by Hobby Lobby tonight, and they had some adorable elves. They were 50% off too. I got a really cute 12 inch guy that has bendable arms and legs for $4.50. :yay::banana:

I use a Mickey Mouse that is dressed in a Santa outfit. He has appeared the past 2 years. We had it on sofa with a note from Santa explaining it's powers to report back to Santa. DH almost blew it last year as he unpacked the Christmas boxes with Santa Mickey in it. We covered by saying that Santa will soon give it magic powers. It works really well. We use it to announce baking cookies and to deliver new jammies for Christmas Eve.

We got this guy last night. http://www.annalee.com/store/14-red-corduroy-elf.htmlI was thinking about doing them since last Christmas but wanted to get something different than all of the ones in stores that come with the books. I went online and got the story from the Elf on the Shelf website and included it in a letter Santa left for the kids this morning! My 7 year old is a little skeptical of the whole thing so Kringle may cause a little mischief tonight ;)

We have one elf per child that looks like them from Elf Magic (http://www.elf-magic.com/). Ours came with a letter introducing them and magic flakes to make them come alive each night. Our elves like to leave a few gifts during their stay (Christmas-themed books, ornament for each child, cocoa mugs/cocoa, flyers to Christmas events in town with giftcards for dinner after, Christmas Eve PJs). They also like to decorate, cook and play pranks (http://www.elf-magic.com/ideas.htm). Our elves arrive Black Friday morning and return to help Santa deliver gifts Christmas Eve morning.

we have the official elf on the shelf w book,,, he is a little poseable but not much,, the 1st year he came he came in a box to the front door,, we made a BIG deal out of look what has come for US,,,, we took him and his book out and I think put him on our mantle, cause you are not supposed to touch him and he moved himself around
The next yr he just kinda showed up but we had been talking up a bit before that it was prob time for him to come etc.

Thanks for that link!!

I bought an Elf from Michael's craft store. It is wearing something similar to Santa's outfit I think and I believe his arms are poseable, he's holding some type of wooden toy. He has real hair and is very cute and realistic looking, not like a toy. I bought him last year and they had about 6 different kinds to choose from. I imagine they will have them again but they weren't labeled Elf on a Shelf, i just went in there looking for something I could use as that cause I didn't like the look of the original Elf on a Shelf.

I wrote up a letter from Santa saying that he was sending them an Elf to look in on the kids before christmas so he knew whether to put them on the naughty or nice list. Every night the Elf will report back to Santa to tell what he's seen(we would move him around the house after the kids went to sleep so they would really think he left and came back). At the end Santa gave a clue because Elves like to play tricks and he hid himself for a scavenger hunt. I had the Elf sitting on a shelf in their bedroom before they woke up and never noticed it cause they weren't expecting anything to be different. I did this right when they woke up.

I gave about 8 clues and it all rhymed for instance the 1st one said, Hey there boys, I've made a game full of clues, If you'd like to play along, go look in Mommy's shoes. Another one said Ha, you can't find me, how can that be, If you want another clue look in the Christmas tree. The last one said I've been here all night, up high on a shelf, waiting for you to find me, I'm Santa's spy elf. The note left beside Elfis(what we decided to call him) said Aha so you found me what a great job you did, wasn't I a stinker, the great places I hid, Santa sent me to keep out an eye and an ear, to make sure you're good for the rest of the year.

The boys really got a kick out of it and so did my Dad :)

We use the Elf-Magic elf and have for about seven years. I try to have them arrive in an over the top creative way but I'm running out of ideas. I've done two different sleighs once with the new reindeer pulling it when it came out. Last year I got giant balloons and a special net from a florist that made a hot air balloon when attached to a basket. I'm totally out of ideas...help please!

We got the official Elf and book a few years ago from my mom. Since our oldest is a girl, I also bought a skirt for our elf and we named her Jinglebelle.

We don't have an elaborate story for her, she just shows up around Dec 1st. We told DD ( and subsequently DS) that she watches them and then flies up to the North Pole every night to tell Santa how they behave. I try to move her every night and a few times Jinglebelle will pull a prank on them.

I wasn’t really crazy for the look of the official Elf on a Shelf and I wanted a girl elf so I ended up buying her at a gift shop. She is a cloth doll that has a beanbag body so she sits nicely on a shelf. Her legs are really long and just made of thin material and she has rather big stuffed feet. She has brown braids, a santa-like hat, scarf, coat and is about 9 inches long…she is really cute but is not easily poseable.

To introduce her last year, I had her sitting on top of DD’s ceiling fan with a ribbon dangling down and a letter of introduction from Santa. I can’t remember exactly what was said in the letter but I did say that she was there to watch everyone in the family and report back to Santa. I didn’t want DD to feel singled out with this Elf watching her. :rotfl:

DD was funny about some of Alisa’s antics….she was afraid we would get mad at the elf for making “messes”. :lmao: We had a lot of fun with her last year. She is set to arrive again on December 1, although I may start the day before or maybe on Black Friday.

My kids are scared of Elf of a Shelf so, unless I want them sleeping in my bed every night (which I do not- lol), he will not be making any appearance at our house. :confused3

:thumbsup2
