Elevator Incident

We had been onboard for less than 10-minutes and were headed to the lunch buffet on the elevator. When the doors opened at deck 9, we found a semi-circle of adults, waiting to board the elevator, completely blocking our exit. We stood there for a couple of seconds looking at them, waiting for someone to step back and let us out but they were laughing and talking and just stood there. I finally smiled and asked "Are you going to let us out?" and the woman standing right smack in the middle of the door smiled back and said "Yes" without moving! We finally stepped out and squeezed between the group and the wall and circled all the way around them to head in the direction we were going.

Once we were out of earshot, I used this incident as a lesson to my 2 young children: "Now do you understand why I always insist we stand to the SIDE of the elevator doors in case anyone wants to get off before we get on?"

Needless to say, we then used the stairs 95% of the time.

You're nicer than me! I would have stood, looked at them, and if they hadn't moved, just pushed "door close" and gone back downstairs without them.

One of my pet peeves. In order to avoid situations where rude people exist, therefore putting me in a funk for hours on end, we try to avoid places like elevators. I have a hard time keeping my mouth shut in instances like the first mentioned by peg2001. Good for you for turning your potentially bad situation into a positive one.

After the two incidents on our last cruise.....

My reaction was almost the same as pegs....only worse!!!!

Friday, i was standing off to the side leaving a clear path from the elevator forward. A woman backed off with a stroller. I blinked and she stepped full on my foot as she made a 3 point turn I hadn't anticipated, and then chewed me out for not moving!

Peg, you bring up an excellent point...

If I have to say the one thing that was an absolute turnoff on our last cruise, it had to be the behavior of some of the other guests.

I guess it's a societal thing, and that it would happen anywhere (and usually does).

However, I got driven nuts by the following:

1. The continual "saving" of anything that's "first-come,first served" and not nailed down, from the pool seats to the beach chairs to the seats at the theater seats.

2. Kids who are flat-out not behaved, and the parents who don't watch them.

3. The lack of elevator etiquette you mentioned

I'm sure I could list more, as you probably could all as well.

It drives me crazy when people get to the end of an escalator and DON'T MOVE. *Where* do they think the people coming behind them are going to go?

For this reason, I always try to leave a few steps between the people in front of me.

Ok, a little off topic since this didn't occur on the ship but instead in the elevator at my work, but...

Has anyone ever experienced getting on an elevator with someone who just steps in and stops?! I mean, right there one step in the elevator even if someone is behind her waiting to board? There's a woman I work with who always does this. If you're behind her boarding, you have to kind of squeeze past her to have a spot to stand. One time I actually had to ask her to move in a little because I thought the doors would close on her arms! It doesn't help that I'm the type who, if at all possible, likes a few inches of "personal space" in an elevator so if I get in before this woman, I have to make sure I step back because I know she won't. This elevator is rather large too so there's plenty of space to move around!

Oh, there was another co-worker who was kind of the opposite. He would always follow you in the elevator. One day I walked in and purposely walked to the far corner of the elevator, and when I turned around, there he was, two inches away.

I have to say, my experience with the elevators on the Wonder during our cruise in December were uneventful. However, we did use the stairs at least 95% of the time so we really didn't have too many experiences in the elevators to encounter problems.

We used the stairs most of the time too, on our last cruise. But we still had a couple of "elevator incidents" that I'd like to share. The first one involved one of the elvators with the glass wall overlooking the atrium. The door opened and we stepped in. There was one other couple in the elevator and the woman would NOT move to the back, even though other people were still trying to get on the elevator. She "stood her ground" even though people were squeezed in at the front, to the point of the doors not closing because someone was too close. There was enough room behind this woman for at least 2 other people to stand, but she would not budge. The other was after an excursion, people were waiting for elevators on deck #1. We were all tired so did NOT want to do stairs. Just as the elevator doors were opening a woman with a stroller pushed her way in, even though other people had been waiting longer. But!! Just as we got to our floor the woman realized she had left her bag on the floor back on deck #1 so she had to GO BACK DOWN!! Serves her right for being so pushy!!!

We found that people on the ship seemed to lose their manners on the elevators, or maybe a lot of them don't use elevators much and don't know the etiquette, bc we experienced everything that everyone has posted. The few times we took an elevator, I had to literally push my way out bc of the people standing around. (I find this in malls near escalators, too, what's up with that??) At one point I said nicely but firmly "I cannot let you on until you let me out" and smiled big. This seemed to break the ice and they moved. I also had the experience of people not moving to the back. One time I got so frustrated that I told the person who would not move - again, trying to phrase this humorously and not aggressively - that while I am a small person I was not small enough to fit into the tiny space she had left and that I was sorry but I was going to have to push her if she did not move to the back. That did the trick too!

After this, we used the stairs most of the time -- we had to do something for exercise between meals!!
