We are new to RVing and Disboards. We have our first FW trip planned for Nov. We run on 30 amp service. Should we have a 30 amp surge protector and if so does anyone suggest what brand/type?

This is the greatest site I have seen.

Thanks

I would say most do not use a surge protector...until they lose an applicance or two and their a/c unit or in some cases, everything electrical. Then they wish they purchased one.

If you get one I would suggest you get a good one that not only protects for surges but also checks the line for under or over currents, checks for proper ground and for reverse polarity etc. They are more expensive but worth it. You can get a plug in type such as what I have or a hard wired type. The plugin type is simple. You just plug it into the electrical box at the campground and then plug your RV into the surge protector. It then takes about one or two minutes to check the electrical lines and when the green light comes on it then allows the power to transfer into the RV. If something is wrong with the line then it will not allow power to the RV. It also protects the RV from surges.

Here a couple of links for the plugin and hard wire types:

Despite the fact I have never used one, I think it is probably pretty cheap insurance and will get one for my next trailer.

Check Menards, homedepot, lowes ect.... I got mine at menards on the clearance rack for $50.00. So just check the clearance isles and maybe you will get lucky.

I haven't used a surge protector, but I do have a line checker that I plug in first at least to make sure the pole is wired correctly.

Thanks everyone. I think we'll have to bite the bullet and get one. I would rather be safe than sorry, especially since I grew up in S.FL and know how the afternoon thunderstorms like to rain on our parade.

Thanks again for all of your advice.
Much appreciated

Surge protectors will not, however, protect from a lightning strike.

I have the 50amp version of the ones listed above. It has saved me at least once from a cross wired post at a local campground.

I installed the Progressive Industries 30A hard wired EMS with remote readout and really like it, especially the remote read out.

I am all for getting lucky whenever possible.

Me too, and I never thought I'd get lucky in a clearance aisle. Although I did meet my wife in the "check out" line of a supermarket. (Insert the Cheach Marin "Check it out!" sound byte here...)
