Electric vehicle parking at theme parks

I know that there are a handful of EV parking spaces with chargers at each of the DW theme parks. If arriving in an EV, how does one indicate that they want to head up to those chargers to try to get a space? Do the CMs know if an EV spot is available, or are you permitted to just drive up to those spots to see if one is available? What happens if you do get up there and all are occupied? Can you just self-park into any spot you find?

I'm interested to hear about how this is handled too. I don't own an EV, but not sure about taking up an EV charging station at a WDW theme park is an efficient method for charging.

I know where some are at MK because we park near them (medical lot). They are always full. I guess I just thought what if someone is in a park all day, do they stay plugged in ALL day long tying it up?

Some charging stations will apply a surcharge (I think hourly) once the station exceeds a time threshold. This is used to help motivate the stations being turned over.

These are level 2 chargers on ChargePoint network that will give you somewhere around 20-25 miles/hour with a J1772 connector. In general, I'd expect most people to be plugged in for several hours as their cars charge up. As a courtesy to other EV drivers, people should move their cars once they've finished charging. I don't know if these stations have "idle fees" for being plugged-in after charging has completed.

These chargers on WDW property are notably expensive per kWh, so you're paying a premium for the convenience & location. I usually charge at level 3 chargers offsite (DC fast chargers) that are a lot faster than these level 2s. Only one time has a parking lot CM recognized that we were in an EV and asked us if we wanted to go to the charging stations; we didn't. I have no idea how they can keep track of whether EV charging spots are still available.

Hey guys. I started an EV charging thread here. I plan to keep it up until Disney ‘fixes it’. Identify the problem. Fix it. Identify the next problem. Fix it. Identify the next problem. FIX IT…UNTIL IT’S ALL FIXED!! Ha.

You might get more views and replies to your thread if you have the mods move it to the Transportation forum. I’m sure it’s of interest to general resort guests, not just DVC.

Except I really care more about the impact to DVC members like myself. I could delete all the other stuff before moving.

Various car companies besides Tesla sells EV's. I would think the list would be more useful to those not familiar with EV charging to indicate either what type of charger it is or which vehicles are compatible. There is another thread about EV rental car charging and for someone renting it for the first time may not realize there are currently no national charging standards. Just because you find an available/open charge station doesn't mean it will be compatible with every type of vehicle.

Completely agree. My post is not for rental company transportation issues / education. My post is to highlight that DVC is grossly behind in brining charging technology to our resorts. It’s a problem actually with all of Disney, but fixing our home resorts is something we have the ability to promote. I can delete all the other stuff.

Also, everyone has a ton of adapters. It‘s not a problem with adapters. The problem is a lack of chargers at our second ‘Homes’. Welcome Home! Here’s $35,000 for 150 pts…oh sorry, you can’t actually drive your car here.

As for the transportation thread related to rental cars at Disney. I can bottom line that for you. Do NOT rent an electric car for your vacation at Walt Disney World. If you’re going to Universal, you’re good with an EV...not Disney.
