We are trying to convince my 85yr old mom to buy an electric recliner. She is no longer strong enough to pull the reclining mechanism on her Lazy Boy up...She can get the chair down, but not up....She needs to keep her feet and legs elevated as much as possible....She is very much opposed to this....I think she is afraid to get stuck in the chair if the power goes out.Is there a release mechanism to safegaurd someone not being stuck in the chair in the event that there is a power outage?? Has anyone had any experience with these chairs? I would love some input. Chris

I had a LaZBoy electric recliner a long time ago when I was pregnant with DD and I got stuck in the up position quite a few times! There was no kind of release and I did just have to climb out of it when it happened. I wasn't all that fond of the chair, so we got rid of it after a few months.

Other chairs might be made differently, though, so maybe just shop around a little and see what's out there.

We got one for my mom about 3 years ago when she moved to assisted living.
It was on sale at a place that specializes in items for the elderly. I think we paid about $500 for it. Mom likes it quite a bit. She is now in a nursing home in a wheel chair most of the time, and even though it takes up quite a bit of space in her little room, she refuses to let it go. :)

My Dad has one and there is an emergency back up on case of an outage. His is a Lazy Boy.

Thank you for the info....I talked with her again today about getting a chair. She broke her hip in April and just got out of rehab....She is walking with a walker....but is having considerable edema in her legs due to heart problems....The problem arises when she is alone and cant get the recliner foot rest up....The electric chair would be perfect....I am hoping she will agree when I tell her there is a model with battery backup.

My mom had one, years ago, do not think it had a backup. She had rheumatoid arthritis very bad. She loved it.

Good wishes for you mom, Chris.

The chairs do come with a battery backup, but you have to check as not all of them do.

How do I know this? My mother (86) has an electric recliner and she's been stuck in the chair more than once during a power outtage. Finally, we just replaced her chair.

My mom has a Pride chair. The backup is simply 2 - 9 volt batteries -enought to get you back to earth. SHe has one with infinite recline, heat, and massage. She was uninspired by the massage, but the heat option was nice. She ended up sleeping in it for a few months after her last surgery. She loves it.

Check out prices online - there are some real deals --- especially look for free shipping.

If we buy one it will definetly have battery back up....I am sure this is one of her main concerns about getting the chair...
A friend called me and offered his MIL electric chair. They are selling it but he isnt sure if it has battery back up.
I am also going to look into the possibility of renting one so she can check it out without making a commitment.
