We are going in two weeks and we want to do this AND walk around Old San Juan and visit the forts...is this doable? Should we do the tour through DCL or try to get to the rainforest on our own?

Help please!

Are you just there for the day? The rainforest is about an hour drive away. We rented a car and did it on our own (Hertz at Sheraton Old San Juan), but you wouldn't have a lot of time (any?) for a walking tour of the town too!

I would probably choose one or the other if I only had the day. We did both, but our cruise started there, so we arrived the day before and toured the town the first day.

The El Yunque tour that is offered through DCL is with a very good company. It leaves very early in the morning and you will get back with time left over to spend a little time (not a lot) in OSJ, but not to take a walking tour. We did exactly this last month.

We would not do a walking tour of old San Juan. We would just stroll through it at our own pace after the tour of the rain forest

I am just curious if we had time to do that?

Will we have time to make it to one of the forts?

Thanks for the quick reply!

I am debating canceling the rain forest since we have an all day excursion planned at Saint Maarten.

Maybe we just walk around leisurely in San Juan .

El Yunque is nice, but a little ways away.

If you just walk around Old San Juan, check out a restaurant called Mojitos. It looks like a hole in the wall, but the food is SOOOO good!

I just did this last week; I had a guide - Carlos (Charlie), and he led us through the fort in an hour, missing nothing as he is an official with the tourist board, then we did a quick tour of Old San Juan, including the president statues, then he took us to the rain forest where we swam in a swimming hole under like a 60 foot waterfall, and we were back at the port by 3:30/4. I highly recommend him, so do a lot of people, as you can see from his Trip Advisor reviews (search Charlie's Custom Day Tours Puerto Rico).

FYI - we had plenty of time to do BOTH the rainforest tour AND walk around Old San Juan. We got back with about an hour to spare too

Didn't go to Mojitos...we stopped for lunch at a great hole in the wall place run by a local family in the rainforest on our way out. It was fantastic! In Old San Juan, we did the choco bar! That was cool.
