I recently came upon a Spring 1990 issue of "Storyboard: Your Disneyana Magazine".
The cover story was Disneyland's 35th anniversary celebration and one of the articles was about the January 12th, 1990 announcement by then chairman & CEO Michael Eisner as to what new things would be arriving at Disneyland during the 90s.
I thought some of you might be interested in what they had planned.
As is so often the case, some of them never materialized or were re-imagined.
1990 - An action filled stage musical based on Dick Tracey.
1991 will mark the first major new attraction of the Disney Decade with the premiere of "The Young Indiana Jones Adventure Spectacular" produced in collaberation with George Lucas. The action-packed live extraviganza will astound guests with the exploits of Young Indy encountering a series of thrilling adventures and misadventures.
Also in 1991, "Here Come the Muppets" a hilarious production staged several times a day as well as "The Magnificent Muppet All-Star Motorcade" daily parade.
1993 will see the addition of Mickey's Starland as part of Mickey's 65th birthday celebration.
New attractions include a magical ride under the sea based on "The Little Mermaid" and "Mickey's Starland Theatre" featuring the film "Kermit the Frog Presents Muppetvison 3D"
1994 promises a brand new Tomorrowland.
Attractions to look forward to:
"Alien Encounter", produced in collaboration with George Lucas that puts guests into a teleportation experiment gone wrong.
"Plectu's Fantastic Galactic Revue", an outer-space musical-variety revue featuring a troupe of itinerant alien musicians.
A new Circle-Vison 360 film presented by Delta Airlines will explore the scenic wonders and culture of Western civilization. Sophisticated Audio-Animatronic characters will disappear into the film at key points bluring the line between fantasy and reality.
A new George Lucas produced Disney 3D motion picture will take the technology of filmmaking to dazzling new hights.
These new attractions will join timeless adventures such as "Star Tours" & "Space Mountain" in a Tomorroland with a totally new 21st Century look including sky walks which will create a "second story" for this world of the future.
1995 will see Disneyland throwing a big party to celebrate the park's 40th anniversary.
1996 - "Dick Tracy's Crime Stoppers". This action-packed adventure puts guests into the center of the action and will bring a new dimension of sophistication and state-of-the-art techniques in simutaion, Audio-Animatronics and special effects.
1999 debuts a brand new land - "Hollywoodland" featuring a towering backdrop of the Hollywood hills complete with a replica sign as well as Hollywood Boulevard, complete with shops, restaurants and atmosphere of the '30s and '40s.
Attractions in this new land include:
"Toontown Trolley" a wild simulator ride piloted by Roger Rabbit which will take guest through his cartoon world.
"Baby Herman's Runaway Baby Buggy Ride" where guests zoom through the sets of Toontown Hospital, fly down stairs, crash through doors and bound over beds.
"The Great Movie Ride" and "Superstar TV". both recently opened at the new Disney/MGM Studios will also find a home in Hollywoodland.
In addition to the $40 million renovation of the Disneyland hotel already underway at the time of Eisner's announcement, Disney officials also discussed plans to build a second theme park either adjacent to Disneyland or in Long Beach as part of the Disney Decade expansion program.
