I didn't know egrets came this far north or this far inland, but I was just talking to my mom on the phone and standing in the kitchen looking out the back window and saw a huge bird fly in. I looked at it and described it and she thinks it was an egret.
Updated: I just looked at Google and found out it was not an egret. It was a great blue heron.

We have both egrets and blue herons around here. I'm sure they're even further north than here. :) Here they are migratory birds though. They come for the summer. :)

Aren't they cool to watch fly overhead, especially the blue herons! Didn't it look like a pre-historic bird, like a ptyradactol (sp? to lazy to look it up)! :p

Yes, they do.....That's why it startled me for a minute when I saw it. I did find out that they go way north but I am still surprised it was this far inland. I think they're usually at the Chesapeake Bay.

They are beautiful! And what great fishers they are! There is probably a good stream or pond very close nearby that he/she is feeding from or they just stopped by to say hi to you. :)

honeywolf, you can also see them on the James River in Jamestown, my sister has them in her back yard marsh in WIlliamsburg, also. They are so pretty to see. You had a special treat. When the weather warms up more, you should take the kids for a nature drive in the colonial area.

We have blue herons that come to our little pond right out my front door.
I love when they stop by :)
