Effort to accommodate Muslim women's modesty spurs debate

Technically they were right. Abstinence is a sure fire way for avoid all sorts of risks associated with sexual relations. Abstinence doesn't necessarily need to be pegged to Christian beliefs. It usually is but they don't hold the exclusive rights to it's promotion.

They were completely wrong (motive???) about condoms and Darwin. It was religion that was fighting Darwin.

What school did you go to? And when?

I personally don't have a problem with exposure to religion in the public setting but I do have a problem with expectations of participation or adherence to it.
Actually, abstinence isn't a sure fire way to avoid HIV when (1) there are other ways to get it and (2) many kids today think that abstinence is about male-female ******l penetration and nothing else. HIV can be passed through other sex acts. Furthermore, while abstinence is one way to prevent it, it's not the only (Communication and condoms being another).

I went to a school of about 1000 in small town/city NC, graduating 2001.

Agree with the pool request as long as it can be proven to be always safe for all those involved.

Laughing at the basketball request because IMO that is all it deserves.

I wonder if non-Muslim women would be welcome during the girls-only-no-men-allowed swim time. If so, I see no problem with it. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be a little more modest. However, I wore sweatpants during gym in school because I did not want to bare my legs in front of boys, and I wore a T-shirt and shorts over my swimsuit whenever I would swim in front of boys. There is a Muslim girl I see often at my gym now, taking yoga and hip-hop aerobics classes in long pants with her head covered. They don't need a wall.

Well I thing muffin topping is against my religion so I'm gonna ask all the hoochies walking around this summer to tuck it in. No I demand it!

I'm wondering if the Muslim women would find it OK if the club said "No Muslims."

They seem to think it's OK to exclude other people.

Furthermore, My DD was told in a pulbic school to save herself for marriage and given little pledge card to fill out to promise she would wait until marriage. Abstinence from any sexual contact is the best way to avoid STD and pregnancies, but saving yourself until marriage is a religious belief.

So there are no non-religious people who don't believe that? Are you so sure?

An idiotic request for people who have choosen to live in this country.

My privately school daughter played basketball for all 4 years in HS. Her coach was male. DH went to almost every basketball game. The independant school association governing the private schools in that state would have a mess on their hands. If the school was public it couldn't even be considered.

If this is a Muslim school they could organize games between their female squads and require no males attend if the girls want the experience of playing basketball.

I have known quite a few people who were not religious who were saving themselves for marriage.

I think her point was that marriage is basically thought of as a religious institution and the word "marriage" being used in a public school abstinence pledge card is kind of stretching the church and state thing.

Doesn't matter. In the US one needn't be religious to get a civil marriage (at the present a civil marriage union between a man and a woman).

So to blanket statement that no sex before marriage is purely religious is absurd as it is simply not true.

Have you seen some of these women? the men might be all for this rule.

I didn't say I thought it was a blanket statement being purely religious, I said it was a bit of a stretch. I do think however, it's a moral issue that I don't believe should be stressed in a public school venue. If two 18 year olds want to have legal sex, who is a public school to tell them wether it is moral or immoral without benefit of marriage.

Exactly my point, thank you. And whether or not my DD has a piece of paper declaring her married has nothing to do with her reproductive and sexual health. And it is mainly the various religions that push that no sex until marriage rule.

Wow! That was a tad rude.

I think the women only swim time isn't a big deal. They have adult only swim at our local pool.

Also the gym I can almost understand. That's a privately owned business and they can build a wall if they think it will increase business.

Now the school.....laughable!

Just adding my .02 - and I agree that private clubs should be able to do whatever they wish, it's their choice. People pay to belong and the club has to choose whom to accommodate. But the public school thing is just silly. Our tax dollars go to support all the kids, and if all the kids and their parents want to see a game, then they have to be able to. If that's not acceptable, go live in another country! We cannot keep bending over backwards to accommodate others who choose to come here to live. We have rights too!
