I've seen folks in another thread speculating about people selling their DVC contracts as soon as a recession comes along. So I wondered what happened in the post-dot-com, post-9/11 recession? Were there a ton of DVC contracts on the market? Or is DVC fairly recession-proof?

I heard that post-9/11 actually increased sales and interest in DVC. :confused3
We were told that it wasn't until after 9/11 Hilton Head sold out.

That makes sense to me b/c I have heard there was a huge resurgence in the importance of family, family time, etc -- a perfect match with DVC when people re-focused their priorities.

IMHO, there is a perception "out there" that WDW and Disney in general, has the aura of safety. Part of it is marketing (family-friendly) and part of it possibly has to do with the "Main Street Americana" image of a time when people felt safer. :)
As I said, I think it's a perception, but I do know that while I don't become totally carefree anywhere any more :sad2: , I do feel more relaxed in WDW than many other tourist destinations that aren't just one resort hotel/ship w/amenities attached. :goodvibes

So, I had just adopted a child, and 2 weeks after 9/11 I got laid off....

BUt despite that, there were some very good resales available, so I bought thru TSS OKW for discounted prices (I'd list them but I can't remember them exactly) + closing costs, I believe...

So even though I didn't have money, and it was a risk, I purchased. I had to rent those first years points until I had income (work in IT - On again. Off Again, etc...)...

But it worked out for me. So my perception is that resales increased, and there were some bargains to be had......

In the first year or so after 9/11 I heard from some CM's I knew that DVC was one of the few areas at WDW that was still growing -- everything else was contracting and retrenching. That made DVC the "fair-haired child" of the resort at that time. :cool1: Whatever DVC wanted, DVC got. I suspect that pendulum is swinging back now, but who knows? :confused3

I would agree there would have been some good deals to be had and maybe Disney let them slide through ROFR as they would not have know the effects on DVC --however I do not think there are any records here-- I do know there were some great package deals to be had.. I do remember getting 7 nights for the price of 4...so I would not cosndier DVC at that point as it would have made it cheaper to stay with cash with the ticket options and commitment.
But some here should have a better idea of what actually happened
