Effect of Alcohol on Weight Loss?

I am not one to drink. Hadn't had more than 2 or 3 drinks in the 10 years I suffered a serious heart condition (just a "sailaway" drink on DCL cruise and sips of one on castaway cay and sips of a lapu lapu at O'Hana's).

Yesterday, DH found the new Bacardi Island Lite coconut rum that is 1/2 the calories -- 48 cals for 1.5 ounces (about a shot glass). I had 1.5 ounces in a diet coke last night (1 pt total) and it was good and is definitely something I could have if we were out with friends. But, I am curious -- beyond counting the calories/points, should I anticipate any negative effect on weight loss if I were to have a drink or two on the weekend?

Just from MY experience, I think it does. I started WW in August of last year and really cut out drinking beer (drink of choice). I LOVE my beer, especially during football season and now I drink maybe one or two a week (probably from 6-8) Now I'm not a lush, but when we get together with our neighbors, I can down 5 or 6 pretty easy.

I notice that if I do have a few too many drinks, I retain water and my weight is up. Now if I do "indulge" alittle, I make sure to drink water before bed and then again the next day. I also find I can "handle" as much as I use to, so it usually take much to get me "tipsy".

I'll have to check out the lite rum. I've been doing rum and diet coke or even raspberry vodka with diet sprite for something alittle different.

Tera -- the flavored light rum comes in coconut, berry & key lime. We LOVE malibu rum, so this seemed like a good compromise. I will keep in mind what you said about water retention and keep an eye open to see if that is the case even with this tiny bit and the reduced calories.

Cam - That sounds so yummy :goodvibes I'll definitely have to try that next time I hit the liquor store.

If you DO drink, just try drinking plenty of water before bed and the next day. It does help

There are two main effects of alcohol with regard to weight-loss: (1) It preempts burning of any other nutrient or body fat for energy, and (2) it impairs judgement, which in turn could leave to unintended over-eating.

Exactly! Your body burns things in a certain order: 1) alcohol 2) sugars/carbs 3) fat

If your body is too busy burning alcohol, it won't have "time" to get around to burning fat until the alcohol is gone.

And, I know if I have a couple of drinks, I am much more agreeable to eating munchies that I shouldn't have!!

That said, I do drink an occasional rum & diet, or lite beer, or glass of wine, but I do notice that I won't lose weight that night. :guilty:

Rhonda - Well... that explains why I've gained so much weight over the past few years :earboy2: No more 6 beers on Friday nights  I think if someone put it that way before, it wouldn't have taken me so long to lose weight ;)
