looked at best buy today with my son as he wants a IPOD for xmas ,they had the nano but the not very educated on ipod sales lady could not answer our questions

1 She said the only way to down load to the ipod is with itunes and it come with the software.
True or not
2 can you down load with window 98?

3 can you delete songs or not?

Please help I am so confused but she also said they are going fast so I need to figure out what to do , they only had (2) 2 gig in stock

iTunes is the software that is used with any iPod. It is included in CD-ROM form in the box or you can download it from the ipod website.

You can add and delete songs from any iPod.

Check the iPod website to see if you can use Win 98 with it.

Also, don't let the woman at Best Buy pressure you. iPods are the same price everywhere. If you have an Apple store near you you can get an education discount.

Also, just so you know, iTunes automatically converts any existing mp3s you have on your computer so you can put them on your iPod. You can also add music you have on CD's. I don't use iTunes to download my music because I feel $.99 per song adds up pretty quickly; but I do pay an annual fee for unlimited downloads through another program (PM me if you're interested in details).

Also, if your son really wants the nano, I would recommend the 4G one. That's the one that I got, purely because for around $50 more I got twice the capacity. Really though, it's what fits into your budget that matters. They're also finally coming out with more accessories for them (not necessarily made by Apple) so there are options out there for add-on equipment.

Hope it's ok to hijack this thread as I am lost too and DD10 wants one....how is the true iPod different from the "disney pod" available at Target?

I decided to buy my Ipod from costco.com because of their money back guarantee. If my ipod breaks all I have to do is bring it back and get a refund. This never expires. Sams club has the same thing. I got the 6gb mini for my 9 year old. They sure do have some cute accesories at Target.

If dd wants an ipod she will not be happy with another brand. The ipods really are better than anything else out there, but they are also 'cool' so I doubt she would be happy with anything else. I work at an Elementary school and all the kids want ipods this year.

The ipod is supper easy to use with itunes (which comes with it for free and works on Windows, check the website to see if it works with 98).

My 7 year old wants one...

LOVE my iPod! As I am a big music junkie (and would lug tons of CD's with me on trips), this has made my life a lot easier.

They are great and very easy to use. If there is an Apple store near you, I'd go in there if for no other reason than to have the experts educate you. Also, it seems like most places sell iPods for the same amount, so you're likely not going to get a price break anywhere.

I would also buy the largest capacity one your budget can comfortably afford. I have a 40GB regular iPod, and it'll take me quite some time to ever come close to filling it. DH liked mine so much he went out and bough a mini, and less than a year later, he's nearing capacity, and wishes he had gone bigger. You can always delete songs, but I'd buy big if you can swing it.

Is anyone else having battery problems with their iPods? I bought my son a mini several years ago, and I've had to spend a few hundred dollars, getting the battery replaced, (It has to be sent into Apple service along with your payment for the battery replacement). I'm really wary about buying the new Nano for my older Ds, since I've heard that people are complaining that the display gets scratched so easily, and that since it's so lightweight, people are accidentally sitting on them, etc. :guilty:

I have had my IPOD for several years with no battery issues.

The ITUNES does work with Window98

How much are the iPods at Sam's, does anyone know? I didn't think to check there. DD really wants the Disney one and it is $49.99 compared to $99.99. She is only 10 and I hesitate to spend a lot if it may get lost.

My wife bought me the Nano for our anniversary, and the screen does scratch VERY easily. After one day of taking it to work I had scratches on mine, where my wifes U2 model has none after a year. Does it make it unusable? No. But it is still very annoying. If you buy one, get a case for it.

OK - I have been all over the Target website and I can not find anything about a "Disney pod." Can you tell me where to find it?

My oldest two are 7 and 9 and they both want the Nano for Christmas. They say its the one because it also has games. Does anyone know if the other ipod models have games?

I just purchased the 30G mini Ipod from the Apple store. It was $299. It holds 10 thousand songs. It is for DD's Christmas. When we talked about them awhile back and she said she wanted an Ipod, she said she didn't want the Nano because it was so small. She was afraid she'd lose it. I also got her a docking station with speakers, a little thing that will allow you to play the songs from you Ipod over the car radio and a set of Ipod socks. The whole thing was around $650.

My son loves his iPod mini! He hooks it up to his computer at home and plays his music through those speakers. I'm contemplating getting a Nano for older DS, and will get a case for it if I do! Thanks for the advice! :flower:

And if anyone is looking for a good accessory for an IPOD owner (one who is old enough to drive) - I would highly recommend the converter for the car. My husband loves using it with his when he drives.

Actually, my DS (12) and his friends (in the car when we discussed it) want one too, and DON'T want the Nano for the same reason.

Thanks for all the other info!

DFi bought my iPod nano at Best Buy and he bought the protection plan along with it. If my battery goes, or basically ANYTHING goes wrong with it, Best Buy gives me a new iPod) and I can pay for the protection plan again. Not a bad deal if you ask me. He thinks it was around $10 for the plan, but he's not 100% sure. Also, they just came out with a shield for the Nano (go to the apple website and check out the accessories) it's a plastic cover that goes over the nano and the buttons and everything are completely operational while it's in the case. You can even dock it while it's in this case. I believe it's called the Agent 18 shield. I ordered mine and it should be here in a week or so.

I guess I just don't get it! I just can't see paying $200 for something for my kids to listent to music on. Does the ipod do something else too? Wouldn't an MP3 player be just as good. Somebody clue me in please.......I guess I'm just not cool.

With you on that!!

What about the MP3 players I see in the ads, think it was ScanDIsk or something. Are these just generic type versions of the Ipod? Do they perform the same basic thing? Where do you get the music for one of these generic type players?

I want to know to! DD wants one too. eeekkkss!
