I'd like to use priceline in hopes of getting a pretty nice hotel for a good rate. But I'm terrified of getting a dump. I've never done it before.

Can you help?

We are traveling to San Diego for 3 nights next June if that helps.

Thanks!

Hi :)

We did priceline for a San Diego trip last year. We ended up at the Hyatt in Mission Bay which was exactly the hotel we were trying for. We got it for $80 per night. We also went to the wild animal park and got another hotel near there for one night, but I can't remember the name.

Make sure to check out betterbidding.com before you begin your bidding. People record their bids and what they end up paying and which hotel they got etc. so that you can compare. They also provide a list of which hotels participate on Hotwire and Priceline to help you strategize and see if you want the hotels that are offered.

Pay attention to extra parking fees/internet fees/resort fees, because they are not included in your bid.

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.

I don't know if you're planning to take the kids but remember that they only guarantee one bed. Many people have had luck calling the hotel directly after getting the reservation and having two beds noted in the system, but they don't have to do that.

Biddingfortravel is a big help!

When we are about to place a bit we go to biddingfortravel.com to review what people are getting in the particular area.

Something I always do when pricelining a hotel, I go on their regular site, not the name your own price side, to see what hotels they list in what areas. Also look at the star levels for those. That will give you a sense of what you may be bidding for. I love priceline!! DH is working out of town, and I managed to get him an extended stay type of place with breakfast and dinner for $37 a night!

The other thing about Priceline is that you may have to, at some point, change your criteria...either by enlarging your search area, the price, or the star rating of the hotel you want.
