What is so crazy?
She has more than 90 days out for PS's, right?
I hope that she has more than one room reserved but other than that I see no problem.

She's not nuts, just a granny! It will be plenty crowded over the 4th weekend, but there is plenty to do. Buy her a good guide book and let her have at it.

My MIL is a total know-it-all. Honest to God, if you were having open heart surgery tomorrow, she's tell the doctor how to do it.

Not that I'm an expert of WDW or anything.....but I've been there several times, most recently in Sept 2004 and we are getting married there in June. So I'd like to think I know a thing or two.

Besides, I spend half my work day reading these boards! :wave2:

At any rate...I think she's crazy for the following reasons......

I LOVE WDW but I guess I'm just a week-after Labor-Day type of girl. I like to be able to walk right on the rides. Waiting in line two hours for an eight minute ride holds no appeal to me.

Especially in the hot July sun. My in-laws are too old and frail to be in the sun all day, with that heat and the crowds. Not to mention four little kids. Well, five if you count my BIL who is like a kid. :bounce:

I think it's especially a bad time to go because it's Fourth of July weekend.

AND it's the 50th anniversayr year.

I personally think the crowds will be tremendous.

Her plan is to go to whichever park has Extra Magic Hours that day, then go to the water parks in the afternoon.

Gee, like EVERYBODY ELSE won't have the same plan.

Well, like I said....can't tell her nuttin.

BTW, I'd just like to add that this trip is for her one grandaughter's fith grade trip. In April she is taking EVERYONE to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon for ten days. For my stepson's fith grade class trip last year she took him to Italy and they had an audience with the Pope. Then she took the two boys to Hawaii for two weeks in the summer. She just took her youngest granddaughter to Russia for a month.

She is of the idle rich, who has nothing else to do but plan trips for everyone.

That week of July will certainly be hot and crowded, but it will also have some tremendous fireworks displays and other special events going on for both the 50th anniversary and J4.

If she's asking you for advice -- or if you feel you must give it :teeth: -- tell her that if there are certain restaurants (park or resort) that she really wants to eat at, that she needs to make PS's as soon as she's able to, since that week will sell out quickly. Same for character meals -- and with that cast, she'll probably want one.

Past that ... there's absolutely nothing wrong with going to WDW without a plan. Not everyone has to plan, plan, plan. It doesn't sound like she's hot to see EVERYTHING, particularly if she's planning on pool time every day, and so maybe she's thinking that everyone will make their own plans and that she's just doing the "big stuff."

Remember, just because YOU wouldn't go during that time doesn't mean she and the gang won't have a blast!

hmmmmmm....I don't see it as a bad thing...I kind of wish my in-laws would volunteer to take my kids on trips. I'm assuming they are getting around pretty well in their 70's to take all those trips with kids.

Like the pp said...offer some advice, or maybe get her a WDW guidebook...and see how it goes.

I have to agree with you... I wouldn't go anywhere near WDW 4th of July weekend. But I'm an "off-season" person too.

We took a long weekend in July once, and it was just too freakin hot and I LOVE the heat!

With the above plan... it sounds to me like a lesson in frustration and a lot of time sitting in the room!

During Peak Season I avoid EMH parks only because they tend to be even more crowded. And in the summer, if you don't have your butt in a chair by 10:00 am at the latest, I wouldn't plan on getting in. Especially in the "afternoon".

Well, we are doing something similar...just a different month.

Hubby ::MickeyMo , myself ::MinnieMo , precious daughter princess: , FIL :jester: and MIL  are going to Disney from 6/2 - 6/9. I am making all of the plans, however. She was wanting PC, I wanted a mod. Luckily enough I got a code and we are staying at a mod. In the beginning, she was talking about getting a villa for all of us. :rotfl2: I would have been placed in a looney-bin before I left.

If you are the one with more Disney experience, you should suggest to her that you make the plans. If she does not like that idea, tell her that your family will come along, but you would like to make the reservations for your family's trip and she can make the ones for your fil and herself.

I went in July once before FP was invented. Advise them to take advantage of FP. Also, I took a Camelback backpack for water. I was a long distance bicyclist back in the days, so I already knew the value of the camelback. I would fill it up with ice and water at the hotel. It made waiting in long lines and the heat bearable having cool water to drink whenever I wanted. Also, the coolness made its way through my shirt and kept my back cool for a couple of hours after each ice and water refill.

Also, agree the postings about giving her a good guide book for her to review. They should have a blast!

I'm with you Honeibee, we used to go in July and now that we've gone at really low attendance times there is no way I could go back to going in July. I can't handle large crowds and lines and by going the second week of December we never have either of those. Of course I wouldn't pass up a free trip either :) If she's really into going at that time and if she's that much of a know-it-all, you'll have a hard time telling her otherwise.

I don't think she's nuts. We're going in July with three kids 7, 6 and 4 and hopefully my mother (78) is coming with us. If she goes to the parks first thing in the morning and leaves in the afternoon for a swim/nap break they should be fine. I'd be thrilled to death if someone was taking my kids on such nice trips. Sure you aren't a little jealous?

I'm not jealous at all. You couldn't PAY me to go on vacation with this woman! Why would I be jealous anyway? We are staying that the Wilderness for a week in June. :cheer2: On an old Dreamaker Gold Plan. :cool1: All my tours and dinner shows are already booked. Just waiting a couple more weeks to make my PS.

We went the end of June beginning of July last year. My mother who was 73 at the time went with us. I generally like to go off season but we had my daughter and neice who are still in school and my son's fiancee who is in college and we just did not want to take anyone out of school.
My mother was fine, we only did one or two of the early entry mornings as she is not an early riser. She is a smoker so when she wanted a cigarette we stopped and also got something to drink, and just sat for awhile. We took afternoon breaks, my mother did not want to go to the water parks so the kids (12,17,21,21) went by themselves. We did one e-night, we stayed until about 11:30 maybe a bit later. We had a great time.
During the summer, it is going to be hot and humid, it is going to be crowded, if a person goes knowing that and planning for it everything will be okay.
I would advise her to start early in the am, take breaks, drink plenty of water, and use fast pass.

If she is truely one of "those" people that you can't tell them anything, then there isn't much you can do. I would at least warn her about the heat and humidity, and also suggest that the kids take a nap/break in the afternoons if they plan on any evening activities. She may not listen, but you can at least say you tried!

WOW! I think my kids would love a grandmother like this! So would I!!

Just a couple of thoughts on her plans ~~

I would not go in July, especially over the 4th of July week-end. It's just too hot and humid and WAY too crowded. With the celebration this year, it'll probably be even more crowded than usual.

If she does insist on going at that time, I would suggest that she book one of deluxe resorts. That way they would have far easier access to return to the hotel in the afternoon for a break. She may not think they'll need one, but with the crowds and the heat it would be nice to go back to the hotel & the pool for a couple of hours in the afternoon. Another great reason for staying at a deluxe would be the pools ~ BC/YC has Storm-a-long Bay, BWI has a good pool & so does the Poly. The kids would most likely enjoy one of those 'almost' as much as going to a water park in the afternoon.

Think she'll listen to you if you make some suggestions? :)

Not sure what the problem is. Sounds great to me and they should have a great time with the grand-kids. It's great that they still have good health that they can do this. My mother is the same age and is in rest home with a walker. So what that there is heat and crowds. It's all about the experience with the grand-kids, not how many rides you can ride, etc. This will be something they will remember for years to come.
