I am thinking about buying my dbf tickets to nexts years golf open in Scotland and tie it in with a long weekend in Edinburgh for us both.

Can any-one recommend any places to stay and things to do there?

We will probably only have 1 full day in Edinburgh itself so I am mainly wanting to find some-where to stay that is close to things to do in the evenings, bar, restaurants etc.

There is lots to do in Edinburgh .Depends what kind of thing you like doing. You could visit the castle or walk from there down the royal mile to Holyrood palace. Ghost tours in the evening are always fun. I'd normally also recommend the tour bus buy with all the tram works at the moment I'm sure if that would be as good

There's should be a not in there somewhere -sorry ! been up half the night with a poorly dd.

Hotel wise there are lots to choose from too. From travelodges at the cheap end to some boutique hotels.

We did the golf at St Andrews 3 years ago. We went with the in laws and rented an apartment for 4 days - just down from the castle entrance (I think it was st giles apartments)

We also stayed at the McDonald Holyrood for our honeymoon!!! Lovely hotel - used Tesco vouchers!!! :-)

We have looked at going to next years event but I'm not sure how easy it's going to be to get from Edinburgh to the golf :-(. It was easy to get to St Andrews - direct train - but I've searched & can't see how easy the journey will be this time - this has kinda put us off going next year

I would say you need to book accommodation earlier rather than later - we left it a bit late - 6 months prior!!!!!! and we really struggled to find a) any availability and b) any realistic prices. I think we were REALLY lucky to find the apartment we did & it was only £600 for 4 nights - 2 bed apt

Even if it was just the 2 if us I'd pay the same to stay there.

My other advice would be to go to Edinburgh by train - we booked our tickets the day the cheap fares came out & paid £100 for all 4 of us!!!! The inlaws tickets from London to Edinburgh worked out at under £20 each - oap rate :-). Parking in the city is very limited & very expensive & getting around is very easy.

Oops hadn't finished!!

Edinburgh is a fabulous city. We love it.

The golf is a great experience :-).

We did Sandwich last year - it's 10 minutes from home ;-) & I found out i had won tickets for this years tournament with 2 weeks to go but I gave them to the inlaws as we couldn't justify the last minute expense.

Happy planning!!

Edinburgh is one of my favourite cities in the world. We actually went for 7 nights in September 2011 and rented an apartment just off the Royal Mile. We thought we would maybe be able to fit some relaxing in, and just stay in and read and watch a few films a couple of the days but we didn't! We had so much to do, it was amazing.

We visited Edinburgh Castle, Palace of Holyrood House, did a Ghost Tour, the Scotch Whisky tour, went outside of Edinburgh to visit Rosslyn Chapel (from the Da Vinci Code book and film), visited the Forth Bridge and did a river cruise, visited all the monuments. We didn't stop! I really cannot recommend it enough (probably because I'm half Scottish ;) )

I've added the link to the photos from our trip if you would like to see them, if you have any more specific questions just let me know :)

If you're looking for cheap and cheerful then I can recommend the Premier Inn at Haymarket (Morrison Link). It's only about a 10 minute walk to Princes St. Have stayed here a couple of times over the years while visiting friends.

If you're looking for more upmarket I've heard good things about Le Monde and Tigerlily but haven't stayed at either myself.
