So I just booked Edelweiss Lodge .
http://www.edelweisslodgeandresort.com/
I booked a Jr Suite for the dates of July 26th-Aug 4th...From there we will head to Paris for 3 days and Normandy for 2.
I did it..It's official...It only took 28 years ,and I honestly never thought I'd do it, but we are going to Europe

Europe is great. I loved Germany and Paris. Make sure to get some crepes from the street vendors. They are to die for.

I was in Garmisch a hundred years ago. You're going to have a great time - it is just beautiful there!

What a tease you are! The resort looked so beautiful that I was thinking of booking for our summer vacation....then I clicked on it only to find it's military only. Darn.

Everyone I know who has been there loves it. Maybe one day we can get enough time off to take advantage of it too. Enjoy.

We were there a couple of years ago and I have to say it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. It is so charming, like it jumped out of a fairy tale. princess: We stayed at the old military hotel then. The new Eidelweiss (sp) was under construction but have had friends stay there. They said it is a luxury hotel. You will not be disappointed.

My DH has finally graduated college, he was on the 20 year program:rotfl2: and his graduation ceremony will take place at Ramstein. So I am hoping we can drive down and stay in Garmisch for a few days.

I was there about 24 years ago. It is breathtaking.

It's lovely! Kind of reminds me of Shades of Green.....with snow! ;) Have a great time!

Congratulations on your trip; you will love Europe!

I grew up in Germany and spent LOTS of time in Garmisch-Partenkirsch area. You will ADORE it. I'm so jealous, I long to go back, esp around Christmas time.

I was just there a month and a half ago. It was amazing! I've been to the old hotel also, but this new lodge is fabulous. It's very well done. Garmisch is such a lovely place, and the Germans are such nice people. And it's great that you save so much paying in American dollars in the lodge.

Definitely book tours through the lodge. They do a really good job, you can see everything and you actually background information that you wouldn't have if you toured yourself. It's also quite easy to take the train places.

And book a massage. They are fabulous and SO cheap. If your kids are going, they will love the indoor pool and the game room. You will just love this!

Send me a message if you need some insight!

Hmmm.... do you want my opinion? ;)

I'm so glad that you decided to stay there. It truly is a beautiful corner of the world. And you will find that it is so close to wonderful day excursions.

If you have time to explore the town, the Partenkirchen side (they were originally two seperate towns) is actually quieter but more traditional than the more tourist oriented Garmisch. There are excellent examples of Luftmalerei - more so than in the Garmisch part.

And the views from near the Edelweiss are absolutely spectacular.

Have a wonderful time!

I've decided there is so much to see that we will go again with my mother..I have also booked 4 days in Vienna, 3 in Munich and 1 in Rothenburg,
The hotel has a day trip to Innsbruck...A 3 country tour of Austria, Lichtenstein and Switzerland and a trip to Brixen and Vitapeno italy .
Hopefully on the way to Vienna we can do the Sound of Music tour in Salzburg

Your trip sounds amazing! Congrats, and I can't wait to hear all about it when you guys get back!

That sounds wonderful! well planned!

You know, I was thinking of you and all that you and your family have been through as I was hiking around one of the lakes near Garmisch. The air is so clean and fresh that it always makes me feel more healthy. Hopefully it will bring you all good health too.

The Lichtenstein tour should be fun - it's such a small country that it gets overlooked. I would like to go to Switzerland more often, but driving there is so expensive - a bus tour is a good alternative.

and Salzburg.... I used to go once or twice a week at least. I won't bore everyone with more photos, but here is one last one - a Sound of Music related one from last month. This is the cemetary where they hide out near the end of the film. I took the photo while climbing the catacombes inside the mountain. I was quite proud of myself to make it all the way to the top (and back down) without injury, as it has been almost 20 years since I last climbed there.

I am glad you decided to add Garmisch-Partenkirchen to your itinerary. It is my favorite of the AFRC resorts (and that was in the old resort).

Soooo many things to do around there. Last time we were there, we did a tour of a salt mine outside of Berchtesgaden. Sounds goofy but was actually really interesting.

Also, one word "RODELN" or whatever they call the "toboganning down the side of a mountain in summer on a flume type thingy". I could do that again and again and a (well you get the picture).........

brotchen, wurst, emmentaler kase & weissbier.....I could live off that forever.....

Have fun!

Garmisch is amazingly beautiful. Please get out and just hike in the mountains like bavaria mentioned.

Dh was born not too far from there. I can hardly wait to go back again in a few years. :goodvibes

I'm afraid we will have to really limit the hiking.. He can walk, but not for extended periods , uphill etc... It's one reason I think the bus tour is a good plan.

Don't worry - you'll find beautiful FLAT walks and for all lengths of distance ie very short distance. Even just around the Edelweiss is beautiful to walk a short distance. And sometimes you even have to stand aside as goats or cows march down the streets! ;)
