For those of you with eczema, have a child, spouse or know some one with it, what triggers their flare ups? My ds4 has eczema pretty bad and I would rather not take him to an allergist to go poked at. I figure something has to trigger it but I can not pin point. I has eczema when I was little but I was told it was nothing like his. TIA

Sorry he is dealing with it. One of my daughters (now almost 13) has had it since she was a baby. We have never figured out what exactly triggers it b/c it happens year round. We did find that if she uses a good moisturizer immediately after showering, it cuts down on the flare ups. However, when/if they do flare up, she requires the medicine we got from the pediatrician. We have tried 3 different kinds over the years and finally found one that worked for her. Unfortunately I can't remember what it's called and we're out of the rx right now.

I would talk to the pediatrician and see if they can recommend something. She did tell us that there are theories that eczema is allergy related but there's no actual proof.

The moisturizer is key, as long as they will use it at least twice a day. Every time she would forget to use it, she would ger flare ups.

Two of my other daughters also had it for a severe but very short period of time and it seemed to go away after a few months.

Good luck

The pediatrician has given us a steroid cream after steroid cream after steroid cream. I hate to put all that steroid on his skin daily. Thanks for the reply.

Both of my childern have it. One of the key things for us is the brand of lotion we use, it can't be anything heavily scented. Another is soap, which can be VERY drying. Winter is the worest and my childer do have a steroid ointment that we use when it get really bad. (can't think of the name) but it's done underneath heavey lotion.

Typical night time routine:
bath (NO BUBBLES)
Dove bodywash
Sauve kid 3 in 1 shampoo (for hair only)
Sauve for kids hair conditioner
after bath
lotion ( I use jergen's orignal)
Breakout area's and face are treated with Ecueran Calming cream.

Also make sure your laudry detergant and faberic softener does not have ANY/minimal dye/fragerance.

Another trigger for my kids is juice, any citrus juice in large amuont will cause a break out. Sunny D is about the closest they get to it.

Go to a dermatologist , not the pediatrician. Dermatologist are skin specialist.

I took my DD to a dermatologist and within a couple weeks her eczema was gone. She used a moisturizer and a mild steroid cream. He knew exactly what to give her and didn't play around with a bunch of different ones.

Thanks for the replies. I do put a lotion on him after the bath, Cetaphil, but he says it burns. It wakes him up in the middle of the night from the itching which makes him not get a good night sleep. I end up putting A&D on it at night bc that does not burn it. My pedi told me to give him benadryl at night to help ease the itching but I think I have given it to him so much that it does nothing for him now. It is all over the back of his legs, up his arm, on parts of his stomach, on the back of his neck. The kid is a mess.

you need to take him to a dermo if it's that bad.
Use the Eucerin and Aquafro (spelling) on his break out area's i.e. his legs twice a day. Also only Cotton PJ's it's a must that they be ALL COTTON, and long pants.

I'm sorry for your little guy, eczema is passed on from the parent and it can be different every generation, mine is mild, my kids is worse, my nephew's is REALLY bad.

He normally just sleeps in his undies but I will try the long pants. And I guess it is all my fault. :sad1:

Thanks for the suggestions!!

it's not your fault it's just genetics............................. Sorry if I made you feel bad.:guilty:

DH, DS 9, DS 2 and DS 1 all have eczema. DS 9 has occasional flare ups, but his is pretty well under control now :yay:

DS 2 and DS 1 see a Pediatric Dermatologist. They both use steroid ointments (DS 1 has a lower dosage) and they both use 2 different oral prescriptions (liquid)...1 is basically extra strength Benadryl, the other is basically extra strength Zyrtec. We use one in the morning, one before bed to help with some of the itching.

We limit baths at their ages to just a few a week.

What kind of laundry detergent are you using?

I use ECOS brand. It's all natural and has very little scent to it.

I also agree with the other posters-no bubble baths. Try not to bath every night.

He seems to have a bad case right now, I would take him in to see the doctor. There must be some better cream for it.

I use All, free and clear. It is pretty bad right now.

For my son it's milk that causes him to break out.

The thing with eczema is that it is really hard to find out what causes it. Sometimes it's food, sometimes it's weather, and sometimes it soaps.

We got lucky when we figured out the cause of DSs.

I did at one point try to limit his dairy intake but I did not have much luck. He loves his milk, cheese and yogurt.

My son had it pretty bad as well. He has the steroid cream for hot spots and is on anti-histamine daily. My pediatrician recommended CeraVe. We got the cream and it has been a lifesaver. We use it at least once a day (the cream at night, as it is thick - I really coat him and then carefully put his jammies on) or twice depending on how he is doing. His hot spots have been reduced radically. We actually went a couple of weeks this summer with no need for the prescription cream which was awesome.

We also do not use bubbles, only bathe every other night as needed, and use cetaphyl or dove to wash. I still have problems with his head as his scalp is really dry. Wish I found something that would work as well as the CeraVe for his head.

You can get CeraVe at any drugstore, or Target, but I found the best prices online. My Dr. said it has lipids in it (or something like that) that helps retain moisture better. Whatever it is, it really worked for us. :goodvibes

Honestly, I would consider a gluten allergy or sensitivity. My DH suffered for YEARS with eczema. He was on countless steroids, some so powerful he could not touch me when I was pregnant. NOTHING worked. Our newest SIL is celiac, so he got her some gluten free beer for her at a family party. He drank the rest and noticed that his hands did not itch like they normally did when he had beer. From there he started to do research and then went gluten free. With in 2 weeks the majority of his eczema was gone! In 2 months the worst of the worst was gone. For him he swears it is a miracle!

Do some research, and you will find a lot of people who experienced the same.

If you go Gluten Free, you have to go all the way to see benefits though, you can't do GF-lite.

I found out my son had it when he was 9 months. He is now 6 and here is what works for us. I use Eucerin lotion after each bath and Dr prescribed Triacylcline (Google it I know not spelled correctly). It cleared it right up bit he has not needed in a while. I use hydrocortisone 1% usually if not severe. Heat ,moisture, food,or dry skin is a trigger.

My DS(8) has it and to control the outbreaks which seem to get worse when the seasons change (Don't know why:confused3) Anywho, he uses Eucerin or Aquaphor immediately after a shower. And as just his daily moisturizing routine. We also make it a habit to get him in a shower ASAP after any swimming or water play i.e. summer time sprinklers etc. We also keep a supply of 2% prescription strength Hydrocortisone if the flare ups are really bad but we always seem to manage it by being proactive to prevent the super itchy flare ups. But that is about all we do here.:flower3:

Funny you mention Gluten Free. I just said something to my husband about it this morning. I will have to look into that. Thanks.
