Eczema?

I never knew that it could be stress-related. That has me a little concerned...since it's my 11 year old who has it. He's the most easy going, laid back kid, which makes me wonder if he internalizes everything and any stress that he might have comes out in this way. I'd much rather he vocalize what's bothering him, rather than it "damaging" his body...:sad2:

It isn't only stress related. It can be associated with allergies, asthma and other conditions too. My boys get this and it is related to their asthma.

Oh yea. When I am stressing, the itching starts. You can't stop it but you can use prevention with not using harsh chemicals, detergents, hot water, etc. Review what is "contacting" the spots.

That is another thing for those of use that suffer is that detergents in cleaners and body products aggravate it.

I have to be very careful when I am cleaning to wear gloves so I do not get chemicals on my skin.

My lifelong use of steriods has literally made my skin so fragile on my hands that I have to treat them carefully with chemicals.

However is managable now as long as I treat my skin nicely.

We do not use dryer sheets anymore. I haven't used them for 10yrs.

He also has allergies (seasonal) and had Reactive Airway Disease as a little guy. No more asthma symptoms thankfully!

I had a red patch on the inside of my elbow (crook of my arm) a few months ago. I hadn't changed any products I was using, and it got worse when I took a shower (or it got wet at all.) I finally went to the Dr after a couple weeks of dealing with it. She took one look at said, "yep, it's Eczema." Hadn't even crossed my mind. Gave me some steroid cream and it cleared right up. I'm fairly certain it was caused by stress...my new boss and I don't really see eye to eye, and it was really bad back then. Talked to my Mom and she used to get it on her hands...stress related!

I just went to my normal doctor, not a dermatologist.

I take back my statement about mine not having any triggers. Stress definitely makes mine worse and I had forgotten that.

Isn't it funny how everyone's eczema is so different. I think that is one of the reasons why it is so hard for Dr's to treat. Mine has no issues with anything touching it other than water. No chemicals irritate my eczema. We use dryer sheets, commonplace soaps and detergents, etc etc, and the only things that really upset my eczema are stress and water.

My Doctors over the years have also stated that having eczema especially severe excema can harm your immune system and cause you to get sick more easily or frequently.

Yes, but I honestly believe that my hands are affected by chemicals so poorly now is because of a combination of steriod use over a long period of time and how I use to treat my hands. My skin on my hands are so thin which makes it easy for irritation to crack my skin open.

And funny you should say something about being sick and eczema. If I think about it, my eczema is better and I have not been sick hardly at all.

Maybe there really is an immunity piece with eczema? I could certainly see a correlation there if I think about it.

In addition I also use food gloves to prepare food with, esp raw meat. A doctor did pass that tip onto me which I do follow now. Obviously if you have cracks you are exposing your open skin to raw meat which is not good.

This is very interesting. I wouldn't say that my DS's eczema is severe, but he is sick frequently. He's the one that catches everything, every virus and bug that comes down the pike. He's the one that gets the warts, the skin stuff, the weird stuff. :confused3

Isn't it? So maybe the eczema is a response to being ill or stressed for that matter.

I know when you are stressed you release corticosteroids (or it may be cortisol from the adrenal glands) and I believe the correlation is somewhere in there.

It's different for everyone, but for me, stress is my psoriasis trigger.

Can I grrr for a minute?

My tube of clobetasol (from 2007!!) has just run out and I asked the doctor to write me a new script for it, since it's the only thing that works.

Well, she won't. She wanted me to use Tazorac ~ fine, I did and spent $120 on a cream that does nothing for me.

She still refuses to write me a new script, saying she's concerned about "skin atrophy".

I'VE HAD THE SAME TUBE OF OINTMENT SINCE 2007!!!! It isn't like I'm globbing it on 3 and 4 times a week!!! :headache::headache::headache:

She wants me to try triamcinolone (??) instead of clobetasol. I'm not spending another $120 on something I don't know if it will work or not.

GAHHHHHH!! Just write me the damn script!! :sad2:

I am really annoyed at her right now.

Most of what's posted here are symptom- relief remedies only. Daily cod liver oil completely took my dd's eczema away. Started disappearing in 6 weeks and was gone, never to be seen again in 8 weeks. same for my niece's psoriasis.

Google omega 3's and eczema-lots of info. Now if the eczema is caused by allergies, I'm not sure if cod liver oil will help.

Infantile eczema is highly linked to asthma later in childhood. Two of my kids had eczema and babies and toddlers, and now have asthma. The other two had no eczema and no asthma.

I used to have eczema really bad and I went to a dermatologist and he prescribed me cream, which really helped. My eating habits improved also, because back then I used to eat cereals with all that food dye & such in them that would make me break out in rashes.

Wish that worked for me. Alas, not at all.

Great thread...my skin is so flared up, it's terrible. I think I have both eczema and rosesca. I have dry itchy patches on the sides of my nose, "red" cheeks, and I have asthma and allergies.

my little cousin has had really bad eczema for his entire life - he's about 6 or 7. the only thing that has helped is Moogoo cream. it's made from all natural incredients, like milk and stuff. i saw him earlier this year and could hardly tell that he has eczema. i'm not sure if they ship out of australia though, but they probably would.
