If we’re bringing an ECV for a family member with knee issues, but do not have a handicapped parking permit, is there a way we can unload in the handicapped area (or some area closer to the entrance) to unload the ECV (and its driver)?

I believe there used to be an area next to HC parking that they reserved for this purpose - you just had to tell the parking CMs that's what you need.

You can alwaays do a drop-off then swing back around to park. Or explain to the CMs and they will direct you to “medical parking” which is near the HA section.

the handicapped/medical parking at MK is a slightly up hill walk to TTC along the drive into that area. no tram even before covid. not my favorite area to park

The term they are now using is "Medical Overflow Parking". You can simply ask for it by name and tell them you have a mobility device.

Now in all fairness, on our trip we were staying at BLT, so I don't know anything about the parking at MK as we just went straight there without driving. But no matter what, I would recommend that over regular parking, the problem with regular parking is you have to play dodge the traffic while trying to get the ECV out. The medical lot has the advantage of fewer people coming and the ones that do come being more aware as they likely have similar needs.

From personal experience:

Medical Overflow parking at DHS is very close to the entrance. They have a couple of different areas they use for this. One of them is really close.

At Epcot, it's very close as well. Depending on how crowded the area is, you may actually be closer that the HC area.

At AK, it's relatively close, but still a bit of a walk. Still closer than regular parking.

At MK, it's horrible. Not close at all. It's at the far end of the front lot, then you have to go down thru the tunnel and back up just to get to security at TTC. Then finally you get on the ferry or monorail. It's really a pain to park at MK. If recommend using the guest drop off, then go back and park in the lot.

Every park has a guest drop off area. If you want to use it, let the CM at the booth know as you are entering. They will direct you where to go. As you come to other CMs giving directions, let them know also.

If you are parking in the Medical Overflow Parking, avoid any spots with ‘Handicapped Parking‘ signs, wheelchair symbols or blue painted lines. Those are designated handicapped parking spots and people parking there without a handicapped parking permit could get ticketed. The lots are patrolled periodically by Orange Co. Police Department and they can issue tickets.
