ECV User Etiquette Question

I have a question about what’s appropriate when using an ECV at WDW.

This will be our first trip in over 13 years, and while I should have used one in the past, I guess I am finally going to concede to using an ECV this time. I will have my cane with me and am able to walk, just not extensively without pain. I was hoping that it was acceptable to park the ECV to the side outside shops (like you do on rides) to avoid having to navigate inside of them on it.

I am assuming this isn’t an issue for in-park shops, but what about at Disney Springs? Is there a place to leave the ECV outside World of Disney, for example, where it would be safe and out of everyone else’s way, or is that not okay?

I am super nervous about using the ECV and I appreciate any guidance or advice anyone can give me.

Although you can park an ECV outside WoD, that store in particular is laid out in a way that is pretty easy to navigate on an ECV. We had more trouble with the smaller stores. We were using the Disney rentals, which are fairly large ECVs. When my Mom first started using one, she also would park it out of the way and use a cane to go through the stores. If you are unsure where to park, ask a CM.

It will also depend on how large the ECV is that you are using. Some of them are more narrow and quite nimble at getting around in small spaces. If you are renting from an off site vendor, you will have more size options and can choose a smaller size. Personally, I prefer a four wheeled one over a three wheeled one when navigating hills or turns. It just feels a little more stable.

The piece of advice I would give to a first time user is to make sure you turn the speed down as low as it will go until you feel comfortable controlling the vehicle. Since they don’t have brakes, you will need to get accustomed to how much space is needed for it to stop when you let go of the throttle (people will cross your path very close to the ECV, closer than you may think). If you will be sitting on it in a stationary position for a while, like for a parade, take the key out to prevent any accidental movement.

Have a great trip!

THANK YOU so much! That is exactly the kind of advice I was hoping for. You’ve made me feel much more comfortable with the idea of using the ECV on our trip.

I will have a small foldable 4-wheel ECV and will definitely be practicing a LOT before I go anywhere near other people. The last thing I want to do is cause any sort of problem for anyone else. 😊

One thing that makes DS a little less "ECV-friendly" than the parks is that many stores at DS have doors that only open manually. As a scooter-user who often travels solo, I've found myself outside many DS doors, looking in for someone who might open the door for me. If you can park your ECV outside and walk in, that's a plus, since it means you can probably open doors!

That’s good to know. My husband should be with me all/most of the time, but I will definitely keep that in mind. 👍🏻

Best wishes! I hope you have a great time!
Thank you so much!! 😊
