I am most likely flying Southwest for our August trip. They don't have direct flights from Los Angeles to Orlando. We will have a stop over.

For those who have brought your own scooters on the plane. Did you have it brought back up during the stop over or have it sent on to the next flight and use a wheelchair to go from gate to gate?:confused3 OOPS.... I meant to say have it go from LAX to MCO...

Did you have to take the ECV apart?
Thanks

I have used Delta several times where I had to change planes in Atlanta. I had them do the direct transfer of the ECV from one flight to the next. Depending on distances, I would either walk or take one of their oversize golf carts.

And there is no need to take it apart. When I got to the aircraft door I would remove the pack with the charger and put it in the basket, and then remove the basket and put it in a cloth shopping bag and take it on the aircraft with me. I also removed the key.

After 5 or 6 successful round-trips on Southwest with my scooter, they damaged it on our last trip. They arranged for a company to repair it and arranged for a loaner while the repair was being made. I never saw a bill and fortunately it was repaired before we had to head home.

I would have said I'd be nervous about the scooter not making it onto the second plane, but we received pretty good customer service at MCO when the scooter was damaged, and I bet even if they temporarily misplace your scooter you'll get a replacement ASAP until they find it.

BTW, be prepared---Southwest at MCO always asks me how much the scooter weighs. Good thing I travel with the owner's manual. Other airports and airlines have not asked me for that info, YMMV.

I always ask for mine to be brought up to me on layovers. I need it to get anywhere, so I always have it delivered to me. I have only taken things like arm rests, crutch holders and baskets off. That's as much as I needed to do as far as taking things apart.

I will have my powerchair delivered to me based on layover time. I always try to give myself at least an hour layover but sometimes when planes are late it gets shortened.

On one very tight connection I allowed for my chair to be transferred from one flight to another and I used an airport chair. I was treated differently using the the airport chair.

How were you treated differently? Good or bad? I will have a 1 hour layover going to MCO at Houston Hobby airport.

It was definitely a bad differently. When I have my power chair I always get loaded first but this time I was the last of the pre boards to get loaded. And all of the other pre broads "miraculously" walked off the plane whe we landed and no longer needed a wheelchair : ).

I don't know how seriously the gate agents take a "young" person in an airport chair even though I explained my needs to them.

I have flown southwest with my scooter a few times when I had to change planes I asked for my scooter mostly to make sure it went on the right plane. They always have me take the key and leave it in one piece. they did damage it once they fixed it and I got a real nice loaner for 5 days for free
