Does anyone have any experience with using an ECV on Castaway Cay? My mother is nervous about bringing her ECV on the island and is thinking about just staying on the ship. I would hate for her to miss it.

Will she be able to use it on the island? Also, I read there are 'sand wheelchairs' available??? She really cannot walk long distances.. will she need one of these for the beach?

TIA!

I don't have any personal experience, but from what I've seen, I don't think she has to or should miss the island. I don't think the ECV could travel through the sand, but she could certainly get around on the island. The paths are all paved. She'd be able to go to the barbeque or get a drink at the bar. They do have a bunch of beach-accessible wheelchairs on the island. They seem to do OK. I've seen a lot of people using them. They have large, fat wheels which won't get hung up in the sand. Again, from an observer's point of view, it seems to be pretty accessible.

Thank you for the reply... I didn't know the paths were paved. I think she should be able to enjoy the island and will be glad to hear that!

Please pm me when you get back as my dh is planning on taking his on our Jan 30 cruise. And let me know if you took it off at any stops.
On our first cruise we were diverted to Cozumel during Hurricane Jeanne and we realized he really wasn't able to walk too far since his operation, and he was really bummed out about that.

My friend has taken her ECV (scooter) on the island twice. There was no problem at all but she did not go in the sand with it. I don't think that would be a good idea. I'd rent the ones they have for the beach. Otherwise, use hers for the rest of the island ... it's paved and easy to navigate.

Tell you mother to go and have fun!!!

I would discuss this with the guest relations on the ship. They will be able to tell you what has worked for others and give you recommendations for what might work well for you. They have golf carts that the crew and staff use on the island and it seems that the ECV should be able to go pretty much anywhere a golf cart would.

As others have stated, the paths are paved. The other plus is if she's able to, she can transfer to one of the wheelchairs that they have on the island which can go on sand. They have special wheels just for that purpose. :D

Thanks for the suggestions everyone... ArleneSP, I'll let you know how it goes when we return... my mom is planning on visiting Nassau.

There are paths all the way to the adult beach if I recall correctly.

I also remember seeing the sand wheelchairs on the island. It is by where you get the floats near the shack that has the snorkeling equipment.

Thanks, I'll be watching. Have a great trip.

It's a snap...The washed out patch in front of the post office has been fixed so you'll have paved road all the way.....
Those sand chairs are a pain to push so don't count on them unless you can round up a Hercules to help push...
