I have rented an ECV at Disney our last 2 trips. I have arthritis and a torn meniscus in my knee plus I am getting older and am overweight...could never walk all day in the parks as I used to. Anyway, I am trying to decide if I should rent for the whole trip to have it for the LONG walk into the MK from the buses etc. we are staying at POR in Jan. 2011. Please give me you opinion on prs and cons of each. By the way my DH does not like that I use an ECV as he has a hard time keeping up with me and refuses to rent one( stubborn) We will be traveling with DD, DSIL, 3 DGS ages 12, 10, and 2. Is it really a hassle on the buses? What about charging every night in the room? Does the charge last all day? Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Definatly go with the outside rental. Unfortunatly you cannot always count on them haveing enough rentals in the parks. They do run out. They are not quite as nice as the ones from outside companies. A couple of years ago we brought our inlawws with us to Disney. FIL has a hear condition He insisted beforehand that he did not want to use one. We rented one for him and had it waiting for him at the resort. He decided to try it out and ended up loving it. Won't go without renting one now. We just plugged it into wall outlet every night when we went back to the resort. Getting around the place was very easy. He was very often the only ECV on the bus.

It's just a few hundred feet or so from the buses to the MK wheelchair rental area. If you consider that a long walk (and I'm NOT being critical!), then, yes, you need to rent an ECV offsite.

As for your husband being upset because he can't keep up with you, respectfully, you need to adjust your speed to match his. The offsite rentals are adjustable, from tortoise to hare; you obviously need to keep the ECV on the slowest speed possible. You can also manipulate your speed by being gentle on the throttle.

Most buses have ramps, you can drive right on. The older buses have lifts, you need to back on. If you have trouble with that, another member of your party may be able to do it for you. This will take longer if you can't then manage the stairs, since the lift would need to be operated twice - once for the ECV and its rider, once for you. It then needs to be parallel parked in a specific location so the driver can tie it down safely.

Depending on usage, yes, a charge should last all day. When charging, be sure to remove the key (not 100% required, but it does have to be off - and with the key out, you're sure it's off :)).

There is also the consideration that most of the off-site rentals are cheaper and more manuverable than the Disney rentals.

If you rent at the parks, chances are very good you won't have to wait for another second Disney bus; because, there are only two slots to fit a wheelchair and/or ECV on each bus. This can happen and then you wait and wait for that next bus. It can be a little intimidating to park a scooter on the bus to get it ready for travel especially if you are the second one trying to get it into the designated area for it. You have to do a lot of twisting and turning to get it into place correctly. The driver needs to harness it; so, it has to be correct in it's place. You get the hang of it after a while, but it's hard at first. For my MIL, we did it for her all the time.

If you are planning on enjoying the resort a lot like utilizing the food court, pool, etc. then having a scooter all the time is very nice especially if you don't get a preferred room. Not walking to the bus from your room everyday is nice, too. The downside is you have to charge it everyday. This means for most bringing the scooter into your room each day. It will block part of your room. Make sure you connect everything correctly; so, it's charging correctly. You need to keep track of your gage; so, you know if your battery is getting low. If your diligent and shut off your scooter each time you eat, see a show, parade, fireworks, etc. your charge will probably last for the day, but if you get lazy about it then you could have an issue. You should always have your recharger with you in the parks if you are doing an outside rental. You can in an emergency use a Disney outlet at the park to recharge. if something goes wrong with an outside rental you will wait some to get a replacement. With a Disney rental a CM will assist and you will get another one quickly. With an outside rental you are pretty much stuck if something happens. You can't exactly desert you scooter; you need to wait for the outside company to get it back for another one.

It is definitely more expensive to rent from Disney. There's a company right now charging $150/week for their travel scooters. We used them in Dec. 2009 and we were quite satisfied.

I'm a recent convert to outside rentals. It gave us more freedom to visit other parks like US, IOA, SeaWorld and Busch, but we had a car, too.

For Disney only trips, I still consider it a toss up. I like to walk some; although, all day in the parks is out of the question. Going back and forth to the Disney buses and to the entrance of the parks I can handle. I'm not crazy about the scooter being in my room. Most of us block our door with it and that really is a fire hazard. I like the safety net of getting a Disney replacement scooter if the worse happens (we had one experience this way) and you have a breakdown. Is it worth $48/day to rent a Disney one? We did have to wait once for a Disney scooter; because, we arrived after a 11 am in the park. We got one about two hours later. They will take your cell phone number and call you when one is ready.

There are definitely pros and cons to each way. I think you have to think about how much you need one. If you need one most of the time, then getting an outside rental is probably best.

I would definietly do an offsite rental. We have a ressie in place for myself for our upcoming trip. Not only was it cheaper but I will have it for even at my resort and DD.

Just as an FYI, you can't put your daughter on the ECV with you. It is not safe for her and they will make you take her off of it if they see you in the parks.
