We have a ressie at **Without a roof over our heads, it doesn't make sense for us to go. I borrowed this points from a different use year, and to cancel under 30 days would not do us any good. If I rent them, can simply change the name on the reservation to any potential taker? I kinda don't want to transfer them because I hoping to take a cruise in the future & I may have transfer points from one place to another and I know you're locked in to a 1 time transfer per year, right? I simply need to unload the ressie for cash without getting in to a big hassle with transferring. Thanks for the advice. I guess our Disney eyes are bigger than our pocketbooks but again it's all wishful thinking and a lot of heart goes into the planning. . . there's always next year, we hope. Thanks for any advice :)

I would post your reservation on the rent/trade board. It is a great location and I think somebody would snap it up for the right price.

Thanks ... I'm definitely going to try, but I just wanted to understand DVC logistics - can I "give" the reservation in my name to someone else by simply changing the name on the reservation (of course it would be a rental). Like I said I know things can get sticky when you transfer (should I wish to accomplish something in the future if I ever come up with some cash). I don't want to transfer. Can I call DVC and say I have ressie # __ in my name and I want to change it to The Lucky They Can Go Family instead of me, and then the renter just pays me for the points.

Down and out in NYC - but not giving up

Details such as resort, dates, etc may not be posted on the DVC boards except for the Rent/Trade board. That is because the post may be construed as a seeking to rent post.

Thank you..

okay - I get it but what I am trying to understand is whether a reservation for whatever date can be name changed as opposed to transferring points. That's my question not whehter someone on this board wants the ressie. I looked on the rent/trade boards and on the sticky it said if you had any questions to ask in the other parts of the DVC boards which I am doing. I not trying to break any rules, I just thought someone might know the answer to the question can you name change the reservation without transferring points.

Yes, you will be able to change the name on the existing reservation.

thank very much

Now all you have to do is find someone who wants your reservation at the price your willing to rent it at. Draw up a contract, get your renter to sign the contract and make payment. Change the reservation to the renters name and note special requests, order DME and DDP if required. :thumbsup2

Actually, I thought of an alternative (I need the money but I don't necessarily want to lose the points). I'm under the 30 days - October is coming up. Could I use those points for a cruise. I know you can't convert them back into DVC points once they go into "holding." How does holding work? Can you use them for DCL and does the cruise have to be taken within a certain period of time?

Yes, they could be used for a cruise - but since they would be "Holding" points they could only be used to make a reservation within 60 days (you just can't use them for a reservation more than 60 days ahead). They cannot be banked and will expire at the end of your Use Year.

Once you are within 30 days, I would try to rent the reservation on the Rent/Trade Board and if that is not successful, cancel the reservation and try to use the "Holding" points in some fashion.

Good luck! :)

If you cant rent the reservation you have until the day before arrival to cxl the res and have the points go into holding. Once the points are in holding it depends upon your use year is as to how long to technically have to use then. If you have a December use year then you are really cutting it close but if your a little further out then that then you might be able to get someone to rent the points from you and use those holding points towards the reservation that they want. I would try and rent the res. and then if you can't do that go ahead and try and rent the points but make sure the travel is before the end of your current use year. You can use them for a cruise however if you are not planning on cruising before the end of your use year then you wont be able to. Good Luck!

Okay, let me get this right about the holding - I have a SEPTEMBER use year and a MARCH (I have 2 contracts) but I think I borrowed these points from the SEPTEMBER contract - that being said if I wait until October to cancel, put them in "holding" I have until the end of my "use" year, i.e. September to re-use them and NOT 60 days. I'm hoping to cruise tihs AUGUST 2010 and I could simply apply it to that ressie? If this is true, there is a Disney God and/or Goddess after all. Thank you, I feel slightly less weey now . . .

Keep in mind that cruising will be an expensive proposition even if you can do it completely on points. There will be several hundred dollars in tips attached to a cruise, and while its possible to get off the cruise with the $95 booking fee and tips and little else, most people leave even a three day cruise having spent a thousand dollars or so in tips, drinks, excursions, photos, etc.

I know it is an all around expensive proposition. I cruised last year on a combo of points and cash and I have already alloted points for a future cruise, but if I could cancel this trip and use those points for a cruise before September (which I intended on doing), then I will rather than sell/rent them. But is it true, what the previous poster said, that say if my use year is September and i borrowed from that use year that I could put them in holding and use it for say an August 2010 cruise. I do I have to use the points in 60 days or is it that I have to do something with the points in 60 days, i.e. apply them to a ressie for August 2010 cruise. thanks everyone. Just trying to make everyone happy at this house.

bumpity, por favor :)

Just an overall much thanks for everyone's input - maybe someone knows the answer to my above question and give me a sense of closure.

As I understand it and as said by Webmaster Doc above, when points are in Holding status you may only make reservation 60 days or less before travel date, so for August 2010 travel you'd have to wait until June 2010 to make reservation ( 60 days or less).

iirc Holding status points may be deposited to RCI and the time you'd have to book travel with RCI would further extend the life of Holding points but I am not entirely sure of all the details related to doing this ( it may give you up to 2 years to take the trip booked through RCI if you deposited Holding points into RCI ) - - you might want to start a new thread on Holding points-RCI possibilities or call MS and ask them.

Good luck :goodvibes

From the member website:

What you need to know about using Holding Account Vacation Points:

You can use these Vacation Points for a new Disney Vacation Club Resort reservation during your current Use Year as long as you book the reservation 60 or less days before the new check-in date.

These Vacation Points can be used for an exchange during your current Use Year in two ways:
~For The Disney Collection (except Disneyland® Resort hotels in California), Concierge Collection or Adventurer Collection if you're making the reservation more than 4 months before the end of your Use Year for a check-in date that is 60 or less days away.
~For Disneyland Resort hotels in California and the World Passport Collection as long as the reservation is booked 60 or less days before the new check-in date.

These Vacation Points cannot be banked or borrowed.

These Vacation Points must be used to complete travel by the end of the Use Year or they will expire.

Basically you have until the end of your UY to use the points (in your case that would be 8/31/10), but for the Disney Collection, it looks like you'd have to select a cruise date that falls four months before the end of your UY...so it wouldn't work for a cruise in August.

If you've cancelled, or will be cancelling, your vacation within the window of 30 days prior to arrival, your points will be placed into "holding," meaning you cannot book a reservation more than 60 days prior to your anticipated arrival. For example, if you wanted to travel March 1st, you couldn't book the ressie until (around) the end of December/ beginning of January. You would have to follow that time frame for the points used for this reservation, regardless of when the points would otherwise expire. You are restricted to booking a reservation to within 60 days from booking to actual travel.
