Ebayers- what do I need to know about shipping to Canada

Someone asked me if I could ship to Canada and I do not know the cheapest way to do it or if there is some duty to pay to ship? Any pitfalls I have not thought about? I need to let the person know! Only 19 hours left and no bids! It would be a pretty heavy package- 8 lbs I think.

Shipping to Canada from the US is easy. If the item is valued over $20.00 US then duty will most likely be owed. The customer pays this. To calculate the cost of postage for the package you can go to usps.com and use their shipping calculator. It should give you various shipping options for Canada. Items to Canada need a customs sticker applied which outlines the contents of the package and the value.

Whatever you do, don't ship via a courier such as UPS to Canada. Use the postal service (USPS) instead. UPS charges HUGE brokerage fees on International shipments. I bought some buttons valued at about $7.50 US and the seller sent via UPS. They wanted $44.00 for brokerage fees. I had to refuse it.

How do I know how much to charge for customs? It is currently at 26.00 right now so I guess there will be duty. Do I have to charge for it or do they pay upon reciept?

You don't have to add anything for customs, believe me that government is more than happy to take care of that.

What ends up happening is that we (the lucky Canadians) get a package either at home or just delivered to the local postal outlet. In order to actually receive the package we have to pay up, or they won't release it to us.

All you, the sender, has to worry about is that you have the postage correct.

And I second the comment about not using a courier like UPS. For one thing I've had nothing but problems with parcels from UPS. They also charge outrageous fees on top of the regular customs fees.

I just looked up shipping at USPS for the item and the cheapest is $16.50! 4to 6 weeks! I wouldn't pay that, but I guess I don't have to. You really get ripped off neighbors to the north!
