I'm having a problem this evening with shipping an envelope 6oz as First Class Large Envelope. I have the buyer pay for shipping, and they paid $1.92. I went to buy shipping, and eBay has the price as $2.58! On top of that, I went to USPS website and postal office would charge me $1.92 for the package. (Same weight and everything!) :confused3

This is the first time this has happened, and I'm going to call eBay to see if they can do anything. But just wanted to let you guys know, CHECK THE SHIPPING RATES! Hope they fix it, so I can get free tracking.

Are you sure they aren't adding insurance or extra services? I shipped 5pz earlier and it was just under $2 so $1.92 doesn't sound right either.

You can't get tracking on just a flat envelope, it has to have something rigid in it.

They didn't add anything extra, I called and they said it was a glitch in their system.
eBay has free tracking, which allows me to check to see when the item was delivered or to check where the item is.

update; called eBay, they did say it was a glitch in their system. since this was the first time it happened, she said they will reimburse the 2.21 that I had to pay.

Don't print the shipping through Ebay. Print it through Paypal or go directly through the USPS website.

I always print shipping through PayPal with no issues.

$2.58 is correct for a 6oz "package" - if printing through ebay or paypal doesn't matter since they are the same company basically, you get a 14% discount which then brings it down to $2.21

If you go to the post office the rate is $2.58 for a 1st class "package"

If it's a flat envelope and I mean it has to be completely flat then you can send it as an "envelope" instead of a "package" and then the rate is the $1.92

Never knew I could print through Paypal, I tend to use the app to check payments. But I went to website and saw the Print Shipping Label. Thanks!

And I tend to use eBay since they offer discounts, but now I'll have to check to see if discounts are even worth it.

Do keep in mind that all priority packages sent directly thru USPS also now include free tracking. It's not available for first class envelopes nor for parcel post. So if ebay is charging you over and above what USPS would charge for a priority envelope then it absolutely isn't worth it. I have always found that e-bay cost me more than going to the post office, even when tracking wasn't included by USPS so I've never bothered with their service.

I've sold 2 items through eBay. Both of the items were the same. Same weight. Same packaging. Same everything. The 1st item I paid for the shipping via eBay. It was my 1st time and the price seemed "fair", and I didn't know any better. I took it the post office and the guy told me I paid to much, that the ebay website charges more then the what the post office would charge. Great! So when I sold the 2nd identical item I took it to the post office and the price was higher then what ebay's website charged me.:confused3

There's always a discount for printing online. Your Postal worker was incorrect.

Sorry, you are wrong on this one. $1.92 is the first class FLAT letter rate. As in the package is thin - just like a letter. This service does not qualify for tracking.
2.58 is the first class PACKAGE rate. This service does qualify for tracking. It has to be a certain width (think 3/4").

To me it sounds like you set the rate at 1.92 - which is correct for first class letters. Ebay does not have calculated shipping for first class letters. They only have parcel rates. So when you went to print shipping it charges first class parcel rates.

Now here's a thing to keep in mind, if an item is thin, never put first class parcel postage on it to get tracking. If an item is too thin (less 3/4") and you do that, the post office will charge the receiver the difference between what you paid and the priority rate since only flat priority items can get tracking.

I always print my labels thru USPS click n ship. So if you go thru Paypal you get a discount????????? After I have shipped at least 60 first class packages?

It also includes $50 insurance.

What many people don't realize is that paypal is a wholly owned subsidiary of ebay - so whether you use ebay or paypal it's going to be the same discounted price.

However going through USPS you will pay MORE for a 1st class package as USPS doesn't offer discounted prices online like ebay/paypal.

Yep this is correct!

The item is in an envelope. Not a package/box. Which therefore should cost $1.92, not 2.58, I believe? :confused3

I just don't understand how I could insert all dimensions, weight, and information for shipping and eBay charges the buyer one price but gives me a different price for shipping. If I have to pay for shipping, then I mind as well charge a flat rate (which I might start) or have free shipping.

It's the difference between the USPS definitions of an envelope and a package. If it's over 3/4" thick even if in an envelope it's considered a package.

If you are selling items that go first class, then you probably should go for free shipping and just adjust the price of the item to compensate. Then you get the auto 5 star for shipping costs.
