My dh just "won" his first Ebay auction. The item is just over $1,000 and PayPal won't let him use a credit card. It's not refusing a particular credit card -- it's refusing to let him use one period. His PayPal account, which he set up ages ago, has our checking account and that's what it wants. Customer Service told him it was b/c he was new and the amount was big. We're really annoyed b/c we would much rather pay for the item on the credit card's "no interest for six months on purchases" deal than straight out of our checking account. We're meeting the seller to get the item and will probably end up taking a money order to him that day.

Has anyone else run into this? Any suggestions? Thanks.

(I posted this on the Community Board, but I know a lot of the Ebay experts hang out here.)

You can use BidPay and use the credit card that way although the BidPay fee may be somewhat on the high side. Here is a link to the site....

www.bidpay.com

That is what I use when I need to send a money order to someone.

Can you set up another PayPal account using your name and email address? I was able to pay with credit cards until I upgraded to be able to receive credit cards. Now I always have to pay from the balance or from my checking account.

The OP is trying to pay for an item, not collect payment.

Is it the seller's PayPal account that is rejecting the use of credit cards? When a seller accepts credit cards they have upgraded thier PayPal account to Premier (or business) and are charged a fee for every transaction no matter how the buyer pays (direct from bank account or credit/debit card).

It sounds like he needs to go into his profile and add another form of payment. Then you'll have to make one primary and thats the one that you'll pay out of unless you change it again. After going into profile, click on credit cards under financial info. and there you can add another card.

Once I upgraded my account, I could no longer PAY with a credit card...only with my checking account. That is why I suggested setting up a new account with your name and email address so you can pay with a credit card.

I used to love paying by credit card and geting my Disney bonus dollars. Can't do it anymore.

I agree with IntenseBlue98. Sounds like the seller doesn't accept payments via credit card (or over a certain amount). Seller might not have an upgraded account.

Here is the trick around this...

Open up two accounts, register your credit card with one of them. Send the amount of payment with your credit card to the other account, so in theory you are just sending money to yourself. This will be converted into your paypal balance, which you can transfer to a bank account or pay another seller. It's like a cash advance! Pretty sneaky, huh?

You can use a credit card even if you have an upgraded account. You have to do what a previous poster stated, add a new form of payment. Then you get a pull down menu and you can choose which credit card or your checking account to pay for an item.

Maybe i don't understand the problem. I have a premiere account with paypal. I have my business checking as my primary source of PAYMENT for purchases that i make. If it is too low or not enough to cover a purchase, I switch to my Disney Visa card, which is my second form of payment. Anytime i purchase anything substantial, i automatically switch to paying it with my Disney Visa. I don't understand why you can't do this this way?

If they are just having problem with the amount being so high can you just break it down into several smaller payments? Good luck.
