In my 7+ years of eBay experience, I have never had anything like this happen. I only ship with in the U.S., and I have my eBay settings fixed to block bidders from countries to which I do not ship. I had a lot of books that a buyer in the Philippines (sp?) wanted. He said he had a sister in the U.S. that the books would be shipped to. I opened the settings on that one auction to let him bid. Big mistake! :headache:

The sister contacted me wanting my mailing address. I wrote her back and told her I only accept Paypal payments. The buyer emailed me and asked me to make an exception and accept a check from him. I said OK. Mistake #2. :headache:

I waited 2 weeks, and I didn't receive the payment. I filed a non-paying bidder dispute with ebay. The buyer never answered the dispute so I closed it after 8 days, and I received a FVC. I also left the buyer neg fb stating I waited 25 days for payment, but it was never received. I put the books in my store, and a buyer came along in less than an hour and purchased them.

Yesterday, the non-paying bidder contacted me, and said he would be sending payment right away. I wrote back and told him that he didn't answer the unpaid item dispute so I closed it and re-listed the books. I told him the books had been purchased by someone else and were no longer available.

Today, his sister wrote me an email saying that she mailed a check yesterday as soon as her brother contacted her about the negative strike against him. She said my address was confusing. :headache: She also told me to remove the neg strike against him.

Dh said I need to just ignore the emails and IF something does come with either one of their names on it, take it to the post office and return to sender.

I'm just wondering what other sellers in my position would do. I feel bad ignoring them (even though I gave them every opportunity to pay), but it seems as if communicating with them is only making the situation worse.

This one has SCAM written all over it. I'd ignore them and refuse the check.

I'd copy and paste the same response to any emails "waited, filed, relisted, nothing I can do sorry" and I agree with your DH, refuse the mail "if" you get anything at all from them.

I totally agree that something doesn't seem right with it. What could the scam be? Scammers are getting smarter and smarter every day. :sad2:

Either the check will be on a non-existant account, or it will be for more than they owe and they will want you to send a refund--then the chek will turn out to be fraudulent.

Some eBayers amaze me.

I agree with your hubby. Don't open anythign that comes. Just mark it RETURN to SENDER. You were more than gracious with all your adjustments made for them and they did nothing but continue to cause trouble.

I can guarentee that if you had sent the books to them they'd find problems with something.
Oh yea, I know you said you had before, but just make sure you've Blocked the buyer's address in eBay.

Thanks for the tip. I did block as soon as I closed the dispute, but I went back and double checked just to be on the safe side. :)

You've already explained to them what happened, you don't need to do it again! Ignore anything else and IF (which I doubt) you every receive a check, don't open it and return to sender. Scam or not, they didn't follow instructions and it's gone, their fault, end of story!

This doesn't necc. have to do with Ebay, but I run a business, and most of my questionable emails come from Nigeria and the Phillippines.

There are specific items these emails will request that make them quite questionable.

I agree with what the others are saying, leave the bad mark there for warning to others. You requested payment by a certain date and it wasn't received, end of story.

Chances are, you won't receive a payment from them anyway. They were just using that line as a "threat" so you'd have the negative taken away (in which you can't). People will do or say anything once they have that big red mark on their file.

If they continue to bug you about the payment, etc. just turn them into Ebay for harassment. And also, make sure you keep every email from them and IF you do contact them only do it through Ebay's messaging system. That way Ebay can see what's going on.

Yes, return payment to sender without opening it IF it does show up.

All in all the feedback system is horribly biased in favor of the seller, but that is another story. I would not trust the buyer in this case and I would not conduct business with him. This sounds fishy.

But does anyone else have this complaint about the feedback system? Sellers should post their feedback immediately upon the buyer's portion of the transaction being complete, right? That is, as soon as the buyer pays for the item (usually in my case, the same day as the auction ends, via paypal), the seller should give positive feedback for the buyer. Then once the buyer receives the item, he leaves feedback for the seller. However, that is not my experience with feedback. I've had problems with sellers being extremely slow to ship an item and wanted to leave neutral or negative feedback. However, when I have done so, the SELLER then leaves me negative or neutral feedback in retaliation even though I paid immediately! This really irks me. The retailatory nature of feedback is horrible and results in an extremely skewed feedback rating.

Feedback should be done in the blind and not visible to the other party until BOTH parties have left feedback...

I haven't responded to the email from the guy's sister, and I don't plan to either. I seriously doubt "a check is in the mail", but in the event something comes in the mail, I'm writing "return to sender" and putting it back in the mail box.

Thanks for all the replies. I just needed some confirmation that my gut instincts were right about this situation. :)

No, I don't have this complaint. Most experienced sellers don't leave feedback after a buyer pays, because the transaction is not complete until the buyer lets the seller know the item was received and they are happy, either by leaving the seller feedback or by emailing him or her. If you leave feedback before this and you end up with a PITA buyer, you have no recourse if you've already left feedback.

Keep in mind feedback is voluntary and you won't get upset about this.

This same topic has been discussed hundreds of times on the EBay boards; take a look if you are interested in differing positions.

I think you did the right thing. :thumbsup2

I can't tell for sure if it was a scam, but I know that 2 weeks is way too long to wait for payment anyway plus the buyer never responded to the NPB alert.

This is why I only accept USPS international mail orders and Paypal sent to a confirmed address for international buyers. Of course, with PayPal it depends on the country and the policies. People from the Philippines can only send payment via PayPal.

I know international transactions can be tricky and sometimes more trouble, but I hope this one person doesn't ruin it for all, kwim?

one reason i do not ship int. except to canada. i block all bids int. b/c i can not trust that my pkg will get there ina timely manner...lesson learned. i have people ask me al the time to buy something from eurpoe, s america, etc etc....i just respond, through ebay a simple, no, sorry.....

Absolutely not. Feedback should not be left until the transaction is complete and it is not complete until the buyer has received the item and is happy. Imagine a scenario like this. You sell a pair of size 8 jeans to me. In your listing you put the size, the brand, and measurements of the jeans. I buy them. I pay. You leave feedback. I receive the jeans and, low and behold, I'm really a size 12 and the jeans don't fit. I email you mad because the jeans you listed don't fit and I want you to refund all my money because it is your fault they don't fit. You tell me your policy is no refunds and all the measurements were on the auction. I leave you a negative and file through Paypal saying the item was not as described. I win. I get a refund. As a seller, you did nothing wrong, but you now have received an undeserved negative. I am a PITA buyer who was totally in the wrong, but my feedback can't reflect that because you left feedback based only on the fact that I paid.

Even Canada can take a long time. I have a neutral somewhere in my feedback now from that. I shipped the item within 24 hours of receiving payment. It sat in customs over 30 days. I got a neutral for slow shipping and am lucky that the buyer didn't file with Paypal saying they never received the item.

What's a PITA buyer?

I agree with all the suggestions not to open anything from the out of the US buyer & mark return to sender. I also wouldn't reply to any more emails from them either, but most likely would keep them on file.

As a buyer, I usually respond feedback when I get the item & it's OK. As a seller, I wait for my buyer to be happy.

I used to ship to Canada but no more. US bidders only even if they want item to be sent to a US address. I also don't ebay fragile items anymore. Even though I packed an item very careful, it arrived in Canada broken. Buyer was OK, though, because they could tell I took great care in packing. However, I was very upset their item arrived broken. Shipping there takes too long too. We mostly use USPS priority because it's faster.

Good luck!

I used to ship internationally, but I stopped because it is was just getting to be too much of a hassle. I enter the weight of the item for calculated shipping, but I was getting 5-10 ebay messages per day from international buyers who wanted shipping quotes to their country. (I guess it doesn't calculate international shipping charges for them. :confused3 ) That would have been fine if the people who asked for quotes were bidding, but they weren't. I'd say probably only 1 out of 50 international shipping quotes would generate a bid. :sad2: Too much work for nothing.

It never failed that when I did have an international buyer, I would have a few messages from them daily wanting to know when their item was going to arrive.

I find it much easier now to use the Paypal shipping labels, and the post office comes and picks up my packages from my back door! :) International packages would have to be taken to the post office, and I would have to fill out customs forms. With my two little ones, I just don't want to do all that.

I do have international bidders who will contact me with a U.S. contact/shipping address. This was just the first one I had go bad. It is also the first time I've had a buyer insist they were sending payment after they failed to answer the NPB dispute. :headache:
