Got the following and started to click on the link, (since it was just a number), thought better of it and copied and pasted it instead. Yep, it wasn't from eBay..it wasn't one of my auctions! It went on to say click here, to change your info, or if this isn't your's etc. Very well done. Details showed it was not frem eBay.

Isn't it sad that there are people out there that have nothing better to do but to think of ways to steal from others! i used to BUY more than sell and back in those days, i would have automatically thought this was legit and clicked on it.
thanks for the heads up!

This is the key phrase here...Ebay will address you by your user name NOT Dear Ebay Member.

I really wish there was some way to really crack down on people who do this. It's out of control. And, really frustrating.

I did click on one of those links not all that long ago. Yep, it didn't take long for my card to be recreated. Fortunately, the bank stopped the charge coming through in the middle of the night from Romania. I didn't lose anything except my debit card which had to be reissued. It was a hassle to not have a debit card for a couple of weeks. I learned my lesson and will now always make sure any email is for real. I've had many attempts since then -- I guess I'm an easy target since I gave them my information once.

Glad you were the wiser one this time. :goodvibes

I keep telling everyone I know not to click any links that they receive from Ebay or Paypal emails. I just had this conversation with my MIL yesterday and told her never to go through any links, but to log into ebay or paypal on her own.

It was a key, but they did put my email addy in it (I blocked it out), and they did send that one message a couple of months ago, that was real, without our name..but a lot of people would have easily fallen for it.

They're getting slicker and slicker with these things.. I just forward EVERYTHING now - LOL.. :rotfl:

Yep I pretty much ignore everything from ebay.

Don't forget the advice you have given before, if you get an email from Ebay go to My Ebay and check there for the email. And NEVER follow a link.

As I said..it almost got me. This was meant more as a warning to those who may not realize how real these phises look. This one had my email in the body, and that was a first. Because it was different from the other zillion I have gotten, and I had bids going on my auctions (so I was curious as to who had withdrawn their bid), this one made me think. I believe I have actually told people that going to my ebay is the way to tell if it really is from eBay if they weren't sure..however, I certainly don't do that everytime I get an email that looks like it may be from eBay. I generally read the details in the header, and can tell quickly it's not real.

The same thing happened to me with Amazon.com. I clicked the link and AOL caught it and sent a warning message that is was phising. I had never heard of that before, so I went to Amazon's website and looked it up. They warned against clicking on links in their emails. They stated that they would never ask you to click a link, you must go to the website and log in. Thank goodness AOL caught it and stopped me.......now I know.

This is what keeps all of us on our toes. Keep telling us this examples and we will stay on top of these tactics. Thanks OP

I too always check the headers on my emails from ebay, paypal, amazon, banks, and just about any others which deal with money. For those of you who aren't familiar with headers, they give additional information about the email's origin. Most mail programs are set to view limited headers but give you the option of expanding the header. My mail program lets me choose to expand the header under the VIEW drop down menu. When you forward the email to ebay it's helpful for them to have the full expanded header. The information in the expanded header usually shows the real email address.

Just recently I have been recieving emails that seem real whereas I get notified that a buyer is upset with his/her purchase. If you don't recognize the buyer's name, don't click on the link.

Now my policy is to always go thru ebay's site, too. The scammers are getting too clever and sneaky now. :badpc:

Doris- you are a savvy eBayer- if they *almost* got you- imagine how many poor sould they actually scammed.

I just got one "from PP" that actually addressed me by my legal mame, just as the PP account is set up. I've gotten one that wasn't "Dear Member" It looked completely real and I bet many are fooled by it. I hve no idea how my name was gotten though....scary.....

I get these a lot.

Be carefull with any of these emails.

I think most people know to forward them, once they realize it isn't from ebay..but they are getting so good at it, and now even using the name, sometimes, you just think , hey, maybe this one is real.

Weird, the first time I tried this, it wouldn't go thru, but anyhow, this bears repeating. Any emails like that about Ebay, just forward to spoof@ebay.com and about Pay Pal go to spoof@paypal.com

Jules

I sent mine to the spoof address but never actually got a real answer. They never said THIS IS FAKE. Just kind of like a form letter covering most any question I could have asked. I still have it so I'll copy and paste:

Thank you for contacting PayPal.

For your security, always verify every payment notification by logging
into your PayPal Account at https://www.paypal.com/ and locating the
corresponding transaction. If the transaction is not there, it may be
for a number of reasons:

1. The sender may have sent the payment to an email address that you use
but have not registered with PayPal

2. Your email address may not yet be confirmed. Until this step has been
taken, any payments sent to you will remain 'Unclaimed' in the sender's
PayPal account

3. The sender may have entered an incorrect email address. If the email
address they have entered is not an exact match, the funds will not be
posted to your account

4. The sender may be faking a payment notification to you in an attempt
to defraud you for your goods or services. In each case, never send
product until you have confirmed payment has been received by logging
into your PayPal Account at https://www.paypal.com/. If you believe the
payment notification to be suspicious, desist shipment and forward the
email to us at spoof@paypal.com so that we can investigate the matter
further.

Sincerely,
PayPal Account Review Department

I sent it twice since I wanted to know they actually read the message but got the same reply above both times.
