i am new to selling on ebay, and im not completely comfortable with the entire system yet. i have a winner of one of my auctions who has sent their payment through paypal (which i accept), but it is asking me accept the transaction, and right now it is listed as unclaimed. it is also stating there are fees with this transaction. i have had several people pay through paypal before now, but this is the first time this has happened- what is the difference, and what should i do? sorry to seem so clueless, but i dont want to choose the wrong thing, and i knew you guys would know..tia!!

:goodvibes

They are making a credit card payment. You will need to upgrade to a business account. This is required by Ebay if you accept any form of paypal payment now. That is the reason I stopped selling on Ebay last year when the change was made. All payments will have a fee charged now...even if they aren't CCs.

The reason why it is different this time is because the buyer paid with a credit card. As soon as you start accepting credit card payments then you will have to pay PayPal fees everytime you receive a payment (whether it was funded by funds in the sender's PayPal account or their credit card).

ugh...so do i have a choice? i have to accept the payment? and there is no way afterwards to downgrade my account? i don't want to break any ebay rules, but i would hate to do something dumb as well...

paypal does allow a one time downlgrade to normal acct from business acct but in future if someone agains goes this way and u upgrade u wont be able to downgrade it.
Also remember is u accept it paypal will charge a fee for all money that comes in to this acct irrespective of it being paid with credit card or not.

Best would be make another paypal acct with a different email address and tell the buyer to send money to this acct and then mention in auction that people paying by credit card should contact u prior to paying

If you accept PayPal, you have to accept all forms of PayPal payment - including credit card transactions. That is an ebay rule. Any attempts to circumvent that will get you kicked off ebay.

For this transaction, you will have no choice but to accept the payment - it would not be fair to the buyer to change the accepted terms of payment after the auction.

For future transactions, you will have to decide whether the advantages of taking paypal outweigh the costs. Your other options would be to accept only mailed in money orders or checks for future payments. Ebay also does not allow sellers to request cash payments.

The fees can sometimes take a chunk out, it really stinks sometimes. And your money is tied up in the Paypal account, most of the time we prefer real cash to spend on non-online purchases. We've tried to get buyers to pay with money orders buy offering free shipping 5+ times, with no luck. Paypal is quick, but not all that convient sometimes. :(

Just curious, how much does Paypal charge to accept a cc payment? Is is based on the amount being paid, or just a standard charge? Is it the same for a checking account payment? Thanks, I'm thinking of selling some things but don't know if it's worth it.

So basically, if your not going to have a hugh amount to sell... why bother? I have never sold but was interested in learning. But everything seems to point to not selling if your a small vendor.

Glad to see this post. Does this mean that if you accept paypal -then you can't get your cash?

I too was thinking about selling some of my DDs clothing -- I have an entire walk-in closet. Is it worth it? Her clothes are 99.9% Gymboree/Zoodles/Chicken Noodle etc. -- if I sell at a yard sale, I will get nothing, if I take to consignment shop, I get little. The prices on ebay for gently used clothing are really good.

Anybody take their stuff to an EBAY broker -- we just got 2 in town? Any experiences.

Even with the ebay fees and the paypal fees, I find that I am making more money selling clothes and misc things around the house on ebay than I do at a garage sale. I looked into having one of the stores that sell for you on ebay handle it for me but they wanted 35%. I thought I could do it myself for alot less. A couple of benefits to ebay over the garage sale is that you have more audience on ebay and you have a little competition. I had an item that I would have sold at the garage sale for .50 because that is what I thought it was worth. Even though it was new, I just did not think there was much interest in it. It sold for 10.50. My total fees for ebay and paypal were 1.54 so I made almost 9.00.
