ebay payment question

I just recently sold a rather large very heavy item

shipping was way to expensive

so the buyer suggest we meet up in a public parking lot and she would pick it up

its about a 45 minute drive for me but longer for her

which Im ok with since it will be a public area and having the buyer pick it is probably the only way I can sell it since its so heavy and fragile

so now I get a message from her that she suggested she would pay me when she pick it up

she said I could save the fees although it looks like ebay already took there fees out

the idea of saving fees is nice but Im not sure even how to end the sale--let ebay know the buyer paid and recieved the item

I have a gut feeling against this and would rather just have the buyer go through the normal way of going through paypal

I beleive this could be even against ebay policies and I would hate for either one of us to get kicked off ebay

what do you think of this idea

thanks all for any advice

No way. I wouldn't even consider letting her pay upon delivery.

But I have to ask: why did you sell it on eBay if it's too expensive to ship?

eBay doesn't allow you to accept payment outside of eBay, it's against their policy.
however when you do meet ask her to leave you feedback right then and there and send a message through ebay messaging system to confirm that y'all met (make sure to have her message you back to confirm it) and everything is good with the item. this can help protect against her opening a case saying item not received and possibly not as described.

But I have to ask: why did you sell it on eBay if it's too expensive to ship?

I'm not OP but many people list big items on eBay and do local pickup. This way they can reach buyers who only look on eBay and if they truly want an item they will go out of their way to find a way to get it. Some people (buyers) may set up a shipping company to come pick up an item, do a special road trip to get the item, etc. If they see it and truly want it, they will make a way to get it.

Congrats OP on the sale - hope everything works out great!

eBay does no allow you to accept payment outside of eBay; it's against policy.
They have lifted the payment policy. I won't use paypal. So I do ask if they will take money orders. And a lot do. So I do send a money order.

I'm going to disagree with everyone else and say you absolutely should collect payment in person.

PayPal has a very strict policy when it comes to disputes. If you accept payment through PayPal but hand deliver the item, you have no proof of delivery. The buyer can claim they never received the item and get all their money back.

I only accept cash for in-person deals.

As for the fees; you will save the 3% PayPal fee, but eBay takes their cut regardless.

She could take a picture of the buyer with the item.

PayPal will not accept that as proof. They will only accept tracking information, and signature confirmation if the value is high enough. I have seen people meet in person and then send a receipt through the mail with delivery confirmation so they have valid proof.

If no money was every exchanged through Paypal, the seller couldn't get Paypal involved anyway.

I would definitely do cash at pick up. It will save those Paypal fees.

You don't have to worry about her opening a case with eBay or Paypal because if she didn't pay through there, there is no money for eBay to refund her.

Do NOT have her pay with paypal if you're doing local pick-up, you will be open to a not-received claim if the buyer is dishonest. For ebay, local pick-up is cash ONLY.

That's kind of the points. The early responses to the question said to get paid in advance. How else would you be paid in advance?

Just cancel the transaction and get your eBay fees refunded.

Local pick up is local to the seller. Not somewhere in the middle.

I have done this before also. You can cancel the transaction through paypal and Ebay. Then meet the buyer and have them give you cash for it.
It saves on Fee's and possible damage in shipping. If the buyer is willing I say go for it.

If you're willing to make the drive, then there shouldn't be any problem with getting paid at pickup. You'll save the paypal fees and since the transaction didn't go through paypal, she can't dispute delivery like several have said. Only risk is if you make the drive and she doesn't show up, you're out the time and gas. Ebay has already gotten their fees, so they don't care. Cancelling the transacting to get your fees back, then selling it to her directly is technically against policy, since you used their platform to get the sale in the first place.
