EBay /DVc Rental?

::MickeyMo One more quick question. I was thinking of offerring this as a payment option, and was wondering if any of you saw a reason it wouldn't be acceptable.

If I was to set up a rental with someone, and they already called for availability, etc. Do you think it would make sense to ask them (the dvc owner) to throw up a listing on ebay at a specific time, that I could then use the "buy it now" for?

Ex: If I was working out a deal for OKW, my room stay would cost about $500.

For a $500 transaction on ebay, the seller would also be liable for 19.86 in fees (which I would gladly split or pay).

So the total for points would be $519.86, then I could pay with Paypal, to use my credit card for extra protection, and I could also have the ebay guarantee, in case the renter backed out.

The cheapest "escrow" holding company I found charged $50 to BOTH the seller and buyer.

That's a $100 total extra fee.

Just doesn't seem worth it for my 500 dollar purchase.

Thoughts?

I guess if you're that concerned about renting from someone I wouldn't rent.

I'd ensure we both agree on the deal, make sure it's in writing and signed as in a short contract with terms and names clearly spelled out. Then ensure you have a copy of the reservation and call DVC to confirm it's in your name. Then go enjoy your vacation. If anything serious goes wrong sue them in small claims court with your documentation as defense.

I'm a DVC owner, have rented many times and never had a problem following the above rules.

Trust is required on both sides of these agreements but having documentation and following some general guidelines ensures a safe transaction.

Makes me think... have folks experienced DVC rental 'failures' that cause this type of concern?

Anyway good luck!

Well, that sounds like alot of extra trouble. Before we became DVC owners, we "rented points" and never had a problem. My recommendation - BUY DVC!!!! :cool1:

you can set up a paypal account and it has nothing to do with e-bay? Why would you go through the hassle of doing it on ebay anyway?

This is a what-if scenario, so take it with a grain of salt; I've never rented out my points.

As an ebay user, I refuse to get "confirmed". To do so, you have to give ebay access to your checking account (or set up an extra one solely for ebay). Unless someone already has this set up because that person does a lot of buying/selling, in my mind it would be a pain in the neck, not to mention a liability, to go through all that trouble just to rent out points. Our points are valuable; renters are getting quite the deal at the $10 price (which really nets out to only $6. per point after the maintenace fee is paid). If you have a bad feeling about the person you are renting from, don't do it. For the most part, the DVC owner making the reservation is taking a big risk as well.

If you purchase off a credit card using Paypal, you will have your card protection.

However, if you are thinking towards getting protection, it does not sound like you will be comfortable renting. I've rented my points with dozens of terrific people and trust was never questioned on either end.

Good luck to you.

In order to rent a unit on ebay, you need to get Square Trade certified. I am not sure of the fees, but knowing ebay I am sure there are some. It seems like an awful lot of trouble for the seller and they would probably just move on and rent to someone else.

Square Trade Certified does cost money to the seller, and is also a bit of a pain in the neck to get. It's the main reason DH and I decided to only rent our points out here on the DIS when we needed to. We also felt that the people we found on these boards were trustworthy and friendly, and we all have a stake in keeping a good reputation around here. The person renting their points if they ever need to again, and the renter if they ever want to rent again!
Renting here takes a lot of trust on both sides - that's the bottom line. If you aren't comfortable - don't do it.... You should get a written contract from the owner detailing the rental agreement, cost, details about rescheduling or cancelations, etc - maybe that will help ease your fears. But if they are going through these boards to rent - they obviously don't want to deal with e-bay in the first place.
Good luck!

Don't be fooled into thinking Paypal provides much security. When I had problems with a seller they were no help at all.

Also, Ebay does not stand behind purchases either. I've lost close to $1500 over the years and never got any satisfaction from Ebay, even when it fit within their guidlines.

Rented on ebay a few times befor buying in never had any problems. :Pinkbounc

1st you have to find someone renting points on ebay. 2nd you take a chance that your bid is going to get you the rental and you might end up paying more. 3rd If you're that concerned over $500 bucks why bother at all? Has anyone ever seen a thread where someone reported that they got ripped off? I think you're thinking about this way too much and even if you do rent from someone on this board you're probably going to loose too much sleep over the process. Might be better to pay cash to Disney and stay at a moderate. Or you can read through all the rent question threads and learn about the process. If you know the process that it takes to make a reservation then you'll know if someone does not ask you right questions and is trying to scam you.
