When did housekeeping become a tipped profession? I know at restaurants, servers are paid under minimum wage and therefore, need the tips. But I didn't think housekeeping was like that.

Personally, we never tip them. Then again, we leave the do not disturb sign on our door the whole time. The less people in my room during my stay, the better. And I really, really don't want the nasty comforter put back on my bed.

The problem with tipping is that many things are different depending on where you go. Some hotels have the same people working the same rooms all the time which means leaving a tip on the last day for the whole time makes sense, whereas other hotels would involve different people providing the service.

Same thing happens for restaurants in that sometimes staff are paid well, sometimes not. Sometimes tips are shared across all people in the staff and therefore the tip should reflect the work of everyone and not just the waiter or waitress.

My suggestion is always to tip at a hotel on the first night you stay. Same thing goes for an resort vacation on all-inclusive stay. Why bother giving a tip when you leave; better to tip at the beginning and get better service while you are there.

So what do people feel is the appropriate amount to tip housekeeping per day? The article I linked earlier said $2-$5 per day, but that's a few years old. What's the current going rate?

Ha, that is the FIRST thing I do when I get to a hotel is remove the comforter(s). Second thing I do is go around with Lysol wipes!

Depending on the number of people in the room and the amount of work we expect the housekeeper to do (clean and vacuum? get extra towels and fill a number of special requests? clean up after a very messy child -- especially messes in bed?), we tip $3 per day for normal service and up to $10 for extra special or extra hard work. (One time our oldest wet the bed, so we tipped $15 because the whole bed had to be cleaned -- this was a long time ago, so we would up the tip if this happened today.) On holidays, like Christmas, we will tip generously because we appreciate the housekeepers working on a day they would rather be celebrating with their families.

actually any hotel that still offers comforters is a red flag. We carry extra blankets from home because, first our choice of lodging no longer offers comforters but as a result, the layer of warmth has been removed so we have blankets and pjs/sweat clothes for sleeping

Captain Kidd's must be the worst restaurant in SoCal. I don't see how they could survive without a steady stream of unsuspecting tourists.

Captain Kidd's is gross, after looking at those pictures in the link.
I just remembered when I went to DL with my Mother she wanted to check it out because I guess it was close by our hotel. I'm glad we went with another place instead of Captain Kidd's. I also remember someone from the restaurant handing out coupons for the restaurant and then when I went near across the street towards the Disney walkway to the parks, I saw all those coupons thrown away in a pile in the entryway.
