Occasionally I know I've peeled a couple (probably many) of green peel potatoes. This past Wednesday one of my IV nurses told me you can actually get sick from these kind of potatoes. So then I googled and wow. I don't like to Google (and read ALL the results) so now....I'm asking my pros....my DISers.

What are your thoughts and/or experiences from eating potatoes that are greenish?

Wow. I never knew eating greenish potatoes would make you sick. Thanks for the replies. I have three giant baked potato size greenish potatoes which are now part of my trash.

😲 😲😲 That is interesting.. giant spuds are expensive... I wonder 🤔 🤔 🤔 how they passed packing inspection... green is an indicator that the tuber was on the surface of the field and occasionally in expensive brands of chips you will see green... I spent a few hours in post truck dumping sorting room for a major international chip company... and told to look for green... not that it was possible... anyhow I find the 10 pounds bag will have tiny green spuds

I know. I might take the package back to the store and ask about them. It's not our first time getting greenish potatoes from this little grocery mart.

I have heard that you’re not supposed to eat them over the years. But I have cut the green off a lot of potatoes over the years, we’ve never gotten sick. I have thrown a few away that were mostly green.

One of my sisters has some memory issues form a brain injury years ago. She texted a few weeks couldn’t remember if green potatoes were safe to eat or not. She got mixed answers from the group. She called the Wegmans she bought them at, the customer service rep told her absolutely don’t eat them, bring the bag back for a refund.

Definitely do not eat potatoes that have green hues or have started to sprout. Potatoes are part of the nightshade family (poisonous plants) and when they turn green that means they are starting to grow into plants again and the nightshade poison is starting to concentrate. It’s called Solanine. The green is just chlorophyll but it goes hand in hand with the potato becoming poisonous.

According to reputable food websites, the green is chlorophyll the potato produces when exposed to sunlight. That isn't harmful, but other chemicals that produces should be avoided. I think most people simply cut away any green areas/potato skins and use with no issues.

..
Like how big of a sprout????
Once it starts to sprout the chemical Solanine becomes more prevalent. I have no data on the size of the vs concentration of the chemical but for me I have to be very careful on the quanity I eat of nightshade plant foods in general as they upset my stomach. The most common nightshade foods are peppers, eggplants, potatoes, tomatoes. Everyone's tolerance varies. There are lots of plants and foods that are poisonous in large quantities that we eat. Spinach contains arsenic if you eat 6lbs of it at one time it could kill you, but who does that. Brazil nuts too, although they pack a more poisonous punch and I think 10 at one time could make you very sick. Ricin poison is made from castor beans etc. These are the plant's defense mechanisms to survive in the wild and not be eaten by other pests and animals, our ecosystem is amazing.
