Eat snapping turtle?

Never heard of this until tonight. I guess its a regional thing.

Have you ever? I don't think I even want to know how you kill it or prepare it. Ewwwww.

I am from Louisiana; and some gourmet restaurants serve turtle soup. The kind I've had has a tomato base with sherry and hard boiled egg. It is VERY good!

I have eaten turtle however it was roadkill turtle...

I had to taste it anyway. Someone brought it in and they had pressure cooked it and then they fried it.

Not great, but I lived to tell the tale.

I've never eaten turtle but knew that people did eat them (in soup). I had a bad experience recently with a gentleman who works for my father. He was at the farm while my parents were out of town and I was there tending to the horses and barn cats. I noticed he was in the shop building so I went to say "hi" and found him beheading a huge snapping turtle.

It's a sight I wish I had never seen and hope to never see again.

I called my parents and they said they were aware he was hunting snappers and they were ok with it. They said they eat the ducks that come to the lake.

But it was still a sad thing to see. I can't imagine how old that turtle was - he was enormous. They are scary looking creatures; I imagine that's what dinosaurs looked like.

And he did take it home to make soup.

For many it is not regional. It is all about survival. When you are too poor to go to the store to buy hamburger and killing a racoon, turtle, oppossum, or whatever else is out there free in the woods puts food on the table, you would be surprised at what you would eat.
