Hi,

DS is taking a trip to Europe for the first over xmas break. Flying out of Michiigan to Gatwick Airport and meeting a friend there.

They want to continue on to Athens. I have found a good rate and times on easy jet airline from Gatwick. I realize this is a budget airline, but I am looking for general opinions from locals about it.

Also, any suggestions for hotels hear Gatwick. They have 6:30a.m. flight.

Thanks for any help,

herc.

Hi There

I cant help you with the hotel, but I fly with Easyjet at least once a month from Bristol with my job and they are basic but fine. They say you get what you pay for but I have to admit some of their aircraft have been better than some of the larger more expensive airlines I've used.

You do have to pay for any inflight snacks and drinks which are quite expensive, but I have always found their service to be fine.

It's like anything when you use it often, there is good and bad but overall I think they are worth the money.

Hope this helps

Sue

Thaanks, Sue. I'll think I'll book the ticket for him.

Do they offer assigned seats?

DS is on a tight budget, so should I tell him to buy a drink at the airport to bring on, LOL?

budget airlines are perfectly fine assuming one thing. you son is under 6 feet tall. the only thing thats generally ever wrong with budget airlines is the lack of leg room. im 6 foot and i can Just squeeze in.

easyjets probably the better of the various budget ones too.

as for buying stuff before the plane advise him to buy somethinbg before he gets to the airport as they tend to be pricey anyway.

Hi

When I flew with easyjet they didn't assign seats.

It was a mad rush when the gate opened to board.

Easyjet do NOT assign seats, at least not on UK domestic flights. I would presume they use the same system for their international flights where you are given a boarding pass with a number on it at check-in, those numbers are then called out in blocks (ie "Would passengers holding boarding cards numbered 1 through to 30 . . . .) and once on board the aircraft you choose your own seat. The trick to geting exit row seats is to be at the checkin desk as soon as it opens, or earlier even! They assign boarding cards in numerical order as passengers present themselves. Hope this is of some help to you!

I've used Easyjet several times and they are fine as someone has said they are basic but that's why they're cheap.

Gatwick has two terminals North and South, each has a hotel right at the terminal, Meridien (I think for North) and Hilton for South. If you book via this link they generally offer the best rates going (http://www.holidayextras.co.uk) but as you'll see from the link there are lots of other cheaper hotels around the airport to choose from. I can recommend the Holiday Inn Gatwick (if you get a good enough rate to suit your budget) as we have stayed here a couple of times. Its only a short bus journey to/from the terminals.

hercamore - I work in the airline industry and use easyjet a lot myself - they are fine. They have modern aircraft and the prices are hard to beat! As others suggest bring some food & drinks with you for the flight and for the best seats check in early! :teeth:

Thanks everyone!

Good info.

madjock, I just got the Holiday Inn Gatwick on Priceline for DS yesterday! Good to know it's ok.

I suppose the HI restaurants are pricy? Is there somewhere nearby they can grab a bite?
