i have been looking into the Eastern Excursions from St Thomas and Tortola. I am a bit concerned bc almost all of the descriptions start with " leave the ship, board a smaller boat to sail 60 minutes, board a bus to travel up the mountain, walk down the mountain to start your adventure." That sounds like a lot of work just to get there! It seems that most of the St Thomas excursions are actually in St John (?!)) and the Tortola ones are an hour sail away. Am i reading this right?

After a few days on the ship, i know Dh is not going to want to get right back on another boat for an hour each way. Is there anything good closer? I am not interested in local shopping,

The port in Tortola is fairly small. What there is to see and do there is on another island or a different part of the island. That's why the bus ride and/or boat trip. Most excursions require a trip of some sort to get to the site, sometimes it's a long trip, sometimes not.

We were in St. Thomas this summer and there is plenty to do there. We spent the day at Magens Bay beach. We took a cab there and had a great time. The beach is beautiful and it's about a 20 minute cab ride. DCL also offers an excursion to Magens Bay.

Virgin Islands NP on St John is worth the ferry trip as far as I am concerned. I love to snorkel and that's an amazing place to do it. We have also taken a cab to Magen's Bay and enjoyed the day there.

There is a lot on St Johns from St Thomas. It's a pretty rapid small ferry ride (it's a fast little boat). Annoying, yes. However St Johns is such a beautiful island (70% of it is national Forrest / wildlife preserve) and the beaches are spectacular. It's definitely worth it, IMHO.

Ok, short ferry rides sound ok . I am not sure about a hour each way, especially since i tend to grt seasick on smaller boats. (Still love DCL :crazy2:)
Forest and beach sounded ok. Bus to forest, hike through snd down to beach. Anyone done that?
I will read about St John again to since some of you are recommending it.

princessSchmoo, Great photo!

I like the idea of being able to be on our own schedule, if something is one easy cab ride away. Of course, it is easier to get scammed.

I doubt you will get scammed taking a taxi to Magens Bay in St. Thomas. The taxis we rode on were large open air taxis that can accommodate several people. I believe they are regulated by the government and the taxi drivers make their living by transporting people rather than scamming them.

I dont mean to imply that all people in foreign locales are scammers. I have spent most of the last decade living as an American in Asia and i loved it. However, i do know that cruise ship tourists and anyone following a flag anywhere are easy targets for those who choose to take advantage. Some places are worse than others though. It is good to know that the taxis are regulated. It helps. I can't wait for our visit!

You do know that St. Thomas is part of the United States, don't you?

You seem to be intentionally missing the point in an effort to make me look stupid. Just because a caribbean island is part of the USVI does not mean that it will function exactly like Smalltown, USA. (Thank God) Will Tortola be just like London?
