I remember that there is some shopping in St. Thomas by the dock but can't recall if battering is allowed. What about in St. Maarten? Is there shopping close by (for tropical clothes) and is battering allowed? Thanks for any information!

yes in both cases we walked to the shops but will tell u if u r not up for a walk in St.Thomas it was a bit of a trek would reccomend taxi to shopping area was fun however peter

I hope you mean bartering, battering will get you a visit to a topical jail -sorry couldn't help myself

Yes, bartering is allowed. It becomes a game with the shop keepers and believe me, they expect it. If you have ever worked in retail, there is always a made up MSRP or *regular* price. Just keep working those numbers. At St. Maarten from the pier you need to get to Front street...water taxi is the best way on Great Bay, I think r/t was 5.00. On St. Thomas you have two choices, Havensight pier mall....walkable in just minutes from the ship or cab to Downtown Charlotte Amalie to Main Street. You can see this from the ship across the Harbor. Many of the shops are the same in the Mall and Main Street. Have fun.

It seems that the farther from the ship you get the more the shops are willing to barter.
