So, my DH and I recently got custody of our 14 year old nephew. We are still learning the ins and out of the whole parent thing. What are good ideas for a small Easter basket for someone his age? I don't believe Easter should be a big gift giving holiday, but I want to do something for him.

Here are my thoughts. I'm thinking of buying a little bit of candy. He's not that into chocolate, so was thinking peeps, smarties, peppermint candies. Then was thinking of throwing in some Axe shower gel or body spray and maybe a gift card. Want to keep this less than $50.

Any other thoughts, ideas?

If he has an ipod I would say I tunes card.

Do you know what he likes?

My DS over the years has received in his basket a

game for his X box or a computer game

A DVD of a movie

books

Swiss Army knife

Camping trinket stuff like a fire starter, survival bracelet, etc

A flashlight

mini screw driver set

Star Wars lego set

Bucky Balls

Does he listen to music? maybe an i tunes gift card or a CD

It is a hard age. My DS is 13 and all I have at this point is a bag of Hershey Cookies and cream eggs and a small Star Wars book! So I need to get busy myself. He doesn't get all those things just so I['m clear those are just things he has got on different years. I don't go over $50 either

What does he enjoy doing?
I got my son some guitar picks and holder and his favorite candy.

Does he have a handheld video game system? You could get microfiber screen cleaners ($5 @ 5 Below) or a pack of styluses (styli??) for a DS, or a stylus for a tablet if he has one.

Headphones. My son prefers headphones over earbuds.
iTunes or Amazon gift card. Gift cards to his favorite fast food place.
Axe shower gel, spray, and deodorant.
Other snack foods he enjoys, like beef sticks, hot fries, chex mix, etc etc.
Soda in glass bottles, my kids get a kick out of that.
Swim trunks, beach towel (depending on where you live!)
Basketball, baseball and glove, football, any sporting equipment.

For a kid that age, transitioning homes and expectations, having some continuity from one home to the next is important.

I'd sit down and talk with him about what he thinks of when he thinks of Easter, and try and incorporate things that are important to him or traditions he wants to continue. For example, my 13 year old is still very attached to the idea of things coming in plastic eggs (last year, I made up a bunch of $1 gift certificates to ebay and hid those in the eggs), and jelly beans. To him, it's just not Easter without the beans. He is also attached to the idea of eating brunch on Easter, whether at home or at a restaurant. I know if he needed a new home for some reason, he'd probably be more comforted by a dozen plastic eggs with jelly beans in them, and a nice brunch, than by a fancy new bike, just because the former would be familiar.

Things I might put in an Easter basket:

Candy (this is where asking becomes key, people have such strong preferences)

Something to be used outside in honor of spring: a football (looks like a giant easter egg) a basketball, or a skateboard, for example. Is there some kind of "staple item" like that that most teenagers might already own, but that he wasn't able to bring with him?

Gift cards: Itunes, fast food, ebay (although that might just be my kid).

Body spray etc . . . if he's asking for it. I'm not a big fan of pushing kids towards these things.

Something to be used for a hobby he has, or to get him started on a hobby? Guitar picks, or new soccer cleats, or something like that?

Books, if he's into that. Or an audiobook to listen to together

A gift certificate for something to do as a family, like a trip to the movies, or a movie to watch at home plus popcorn and candy.

Now that our kids are teens, Easter baskets are some candy they like and a gift card. Simple, yet they like it.

My DS is 14 too. In his Easter basket he is getting a chocolate bunny, other small Easter candy, gum, golf balls, golf tees, and Axe body spray.

At that age boys LOVE food. For Christmas I packed a shoebox full of DS's favorite snack foods, especially the kinds I don't buy very often. He thought it was the best gift ever.

I just talked to him and found out that to him, Easter isn't Easter without a stuffed animal in his basket. I never would have guessed that!

I'm glad that my thoughts seem to be on track with others are doing. Thanks for the input!

How exciting for you! I am glad you asked him what he usually got so you can be on the same page!

I'm glad you asked!

Isn't this age great? One minute they seem all grown up, and then suddenly they're a little kid again, asking for a stuffed animal in their Easter basket.

That was a good idea the pp had to ask! :goodvibes

I second the iTunes gift card and whatever his favorite Easter candy is.

It is nice of you and your dh to look out for him. :)

How about a magazine he likes (if he reads any) or even a subscription. Really glad you found out about the plush.

We are including bacon salt and a new book light in DS basket. He loves bacon so I thought the bacon salt would be fun. I like the golf tee idea, DS is always low on tees.

OMG bacon salt.... my two favourate unhealthy items combined into one :cool1:.... must see if you can get it in the UK :goodvibes

My Ds is 14 and he gets a video game, a baseball magazine, a book on the Phillies pitchers, candy, and squirt things for the pool, because him and his friends love to"play war" in the pool or he brings them to friends' houses and they play with them in the yard.

DS17 will get an all Reeses basket. He loved Reeses, so he will get the huge Reeses egg, small Reeses eggs, big Reeses rabbit and small Reeses rabbit. Oh and I did add some Sour Patch Rabbits in there too.

We don't do big easter gifts. Usually it's candy and books or a few movies. DS got Monty Python Search for the Holy Grail when he was 15. I thought it went well with the Easter theme.

Totally agree. My tween/teen both flip over things like Slim Jims, pistachios, and any kind of junky snack foods (pringles, etc.) They love when they have their own stash!!
