So my DH and I have been wondering this for some time now...

Why is it people that live on the EC say, "We're going to Disney" where people on the WC say, "We're going to Disneyland/Disneyworld?"

I remember thinking this the first time watching JK+8 when they went to WDW and Kate and the kids kept saying, "We're going to Disney!"

I've noticed this on the boards too..

LOL just curious!

My guess is I am thinking mostly the EC people go to WDW while the WC people will go to both. So the WC has to differentiate it with World or Land.

I lived in New England my whole life until 2008 when we moved to Southern CA. We ONLY ever went to WDW. I never even gave DL a thought. Now I go weekly to DL. :rotfl: I always referred to WDW as Disney until moving here...now it is Land or World. ::yes::

What annoys me is people that call BOTH places DISNEYLAND! :headache:

I say were going to WDW or WDL, mostly though we say we're going to WDW! It's closer. The term we're going to Disney could mean anything in our house. It needs to be specified.

I live so close to DL, that if I just said Im going to Disney, everyone would assume I was going to DLR. But if I say Disneyworld, they know its WDW.

I think it's because the majority of east coasters go to WDW. It's closer, it's easier and it has more to offer. On the west coast it's easier to go to DL so people tend to specify. Going to WDW from the West Coast probably is more 'impressive' to an outsider because it is so far away.

I grew up on the West Coast, still here, and we never referred to Disneyland as only "Disney" - Disney stands for the overall brand (movies, stores, parks, etc), whereas, to us (in my circle of acquaintances), Disneyland is the actual place.

I say DisneyWorld. Its name is DisneyWorld.

Disney is a person or company to me.

Haviung growing up in California we went to DL, and therefore it was called Disneyland. Now that we live onthe east coast we still say land or world, but I've noticed that many of those around me just say Disney. I'm thinking it's because not many go to both.

Between the immediate Disney World going people I know, when we're going to Disney World, we just say Disney. If we're going to DL, we say Disneyland.

If we talk to non-Disney World going folk, it's Disney World and Disneyland.

Also, a lot of people still call Disney World by the improper name of Disneyland or they call it Disneyland in Florida.

Oh yes, I live on the west coast in the Portland, OR area. Most people from the area will go to Disneyland and if we ever just say Disney to them, they'll assume Disneyland.

I saw DisneyWorld. Its name is DisneyWorld.

Disney is a person or company to me.

I agree. I always say "Disney World". The name "Disney" is just that, a name....or a brand as someone mentioned above.

I've never heard anyone say "I'm going to Disney". If I did, even though I'd probably realize they meant Disney World, I'd have to be a wise guy and ask "Do you mean Disney WORLD or Disney LAND or on a Disney CRUISE?? What do you mean you're going to Disney?" just to bust their chops.

I work in a school & most of the people here (students & staff) say Disney if they are going to FL & Disneyland if they are going to CA. Just today, a student told me he is going to Disney for Thanksgiving. I knew exactly what he meant. :rotfl:
I can't stand when people say they are going to Disneyland in Florida!

What drives me slightly nuts is when TV shows that are based in NYC have characters mention Disneyland. Not as many people here have been to Disneyland as they have been to WDW. These shows are written and filmed in California, I think they forget they are supposed to be on the East coast sometimes.

Petty gripe, I know.

East coaster here and always say "DisneyWorld" for FL and Disneyland for CA.

I'm not sure what I say, but since I have no intention of ever going to WDL, Disney is the, "World" to me.

I'd love to come out to CA though, so I'm not taking any pot shots at our west coast counterparts. There are just a million and 1 other things I'd do if I ever made it out that way.

Here in the heartland we say we're going to the "land" or the "world". Gotta say I love the land most of all.
